How do you calculate the number of hit points a character has?

Hit die is one of the items in a class's entry in the book.  First level, you get that plus your constitution modifier (As a ranger, I believe you're a d6 or a d8.  You are a ranger, right?)  After that, you roll the corresponding die plus constitution modifier for hp.

So if my constitution mod is +1 and I my hit die as a ranger is d8, I add whatever I roll with a 8 sided die to my Con modifier? So I could have 2 HP total if I roll bad.

You don't roll for level 1, you just take the highest value.  You have 9hp
