Crocodile egg not hatching?
« on: March 19, 2011, 08:11:23 pm »

So I embarked with 2 cave crocodiles (one of each sex), and the female laid 43(yes...FORTY THREE EGGS) in a single push.

I forbidden the eggs so they don't get hauled, but my male won't go there to fertilize the eggs. The female won't leave the nest box. I want watch crocs  :'(

Does it take that long, or am I doing something wrong?

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

Takes one season. Or maybe more. But you will get your crocs.

Oh and the male doesn't needs physical contact to impregnate the eggs.. It's called reproducing by spores.

The male doesn't need to be there in person for the eggs to be fertilized.  It happens remotely by spores.  You just need to let the female sit on the eggs undisturbed in the nesting box for a season or so till they hatch.

You are going to regret allowing those crocs to live. Your FPS will weep.

I did this, it took nearly 3 seasons for my croc eggs to hatch, but I got 50 crocs from it, and butchered all the weaklings. Then, WAR GATORS.

Hatching time relates to egg size.  Gators presumably have large eggs.  On the good side, you can do as previously said, and butcher all the "He is small" and "he is weak" to get only gigantic, strong gators for warfare.

Thanks for the info, guys =)

EDIT: And here are the little brats. I'm so happy hatching finally worked for me Haha

Hmm, so does this mean you can't create a working egg in a workshop?

Correct.  Trust me, there will be a huge uproar as soon as the creation of life is achieved.  You will know about it rather instantly, because the same hour that Toady releases that little token, you'll see someone mod in automaton soldiers - and that's the tamest of ideas.

Genesis allows pet cave gators, actually.  The validity of this as "cheating" is up for debate.

Nah, I'm cheating. Notice how the doors of the meeting hall are made out of Adamantine.
