Holy shit Moon
« on: March 19, 2011, 02:22:45 pm »

Its pretty freaking close this week, my father letted me burrow his binoculars, some pretty high end ones, am i an idiot if i first discovered what people mean with the face of the Moon now? Im watching right now, closely inspecting "The Sea of Death" and a few basins, very facinating, and i cant wait untill i can see the craters shadows..
Sorry for crappy grammar, i am just pretty fucking wild right now.

It's a big moon tonight, the biggest, in fact. Or, last night, for me. I wish I'd had my dad's high-powered telescope but no, I was washing dishes. Still, it was pretty awesome.

I got a good look at it last night in a clear sky, and I will again today if it weren't for the cloud cover. Hoping that'll pass over. It was way too bright to look at for too long.

Please don't look at a full moon with a telescope.  You'll kill your poor sensitive eyes.

Aww man, now I want a telescope again. :/

An astronomy professor who co-leads the Bird Rescue I work at handed me a pair of binoculars, and pointed out some things to see on the moon one night. We had a lot of time, as an injured Swan we'd found that evening was getting some work done. I was really surprised by the level of detail you can get even with just binoculars... if you look along the dark line, the sun's light highlights the edge of some massive craters.

They must be huge... it's rather mind-blowing to think about.

Looking at the moons of Jupiter and the ring of Saturn is awesome too.  You can actually see the four largest moons as little bright dots.

I new about this a couple of weeks ago, when it was theorized it's gravitational pull with increase due to its relative "closeness" with the Earth and that earthquakes might happen.............oh.

Apparently about 1/4 times this happens, a(n) (big) earthquake follows.  Scientists are on boths sides of the fence on causality and coincidence.

I looked up at the sky, and what do you know, there's a big bright moon up there.  I had the same disappointment about Mars coming closer to Earth than ever too, a few years ago.  When I hear "close" and "large", I'm expecting something more like this.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
