Bang rocks together and make sharp rocks.

Yeah, it sucks.

On the other hand, if I remember correctly, training knapping raises your spatial sense which helps you in combat, so you might as well bang rocks together until you have a couple of ranks. There's absolutely no reason to put points in it at the start, though.

Edit: Looked at the attribute page, knapping apparently raises strength, agility, analytical ability, spatial sense, and kinesthetic sense.

Knapping rocks together to make sharp ones will be helpful if you decide you want to butcher an animal, but you have no sharp weapon at hand - the sharp rocks are sharp, after all.

Every few miles, [the dwarves] stop the cart.  One of the dwarfs (sic) gets off, digs a hole down below the dirt layers, licks the bedrock, and then they know exactly where they are.  It's called GPS: Geological Piquancy Sampling.

They also serve as decent free ammo for throwers.

Throwing sharpened rocks has seen many of my peasant characters through their early days.

Didn't realize it boosted spatial awareness and kinesthetic sense, good to know, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to knap more often now.

Knapping + Throwing are a born combo, as SirAaronIII said.

Along with the other advantages we've heard, I also used Knapping for my Self Sufficiency Mod...Unfortunately, I couldn't control certain aspects and it ended up getting out of hand.

Sa...Wha...Is it stranger that you can butcher sentients or that you can make swords out of brains?
Also, how?

I once saw a champ of mine make high quality sharp rocks, and they frick'n hurt people when they hit. I could never reproduce this in another game though. I was cutting off heads and puncturing enemies. It was amazing. I even have an auto-hotkey macro set for training up rock throwing and knapping, because for some reason I've convinced myself that since I made the macros myself, it's not cheating like altering the raws.

Even if you're using macros, it still takes time for the commands to process. You're just saving yourself the trouble of pressing a bunch of keys. I wouldn't consider it cheating either, macros are there for a reason. ^^

So.. does a kidknapper actually steal two kids and slam them together until they're sharp?

Only until the children are sharp enough to play Dwarf Fortress without adult supervision. :D

Actually, it appears you don't have to butcher them to make swords out of their brains. It seems the game randomly grabs a material from the body. So if you use a severed head, you'll likely get brains as a material. Surprisingly sharp.
The worst part was the guy used to be my companion. Hohoho.

And, since you asked so nicely, here's how.

Just remember, this raw file was only an experiment into knapping. I take no responsibility on anything anyone does with this, or what this does to you. :P

There's nothing wrong with it, why would you take no responsibility of your own creations? >: )
