I'm trying to do royalty... it's harder than I thought, since I picked a bad pose to start with... I wanted arms folded near the torso, but it's impossible to make armsleeves look different from torso at this resolution.

Maybe one hand will have to be outstretched, holding something like one of those silly orbs with a crown on it?  I wanted the religion image to be a sort of "Moses parting the Red Sea" kind of pose, though, and it might be wierd to have everyone waving their hands in the air like they just don't care.

OoooOOOOooh. I should make it look like this:
http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Image:The_Portrait_of_the_Qing_Dynasty_Cixi_Imperial_Dowager_Empress_of_China_in_the_1900s.PNG

That's royalty in a serpentine fashion.  I should put some sort of fan or something in there.

OK, queen me.

The skin is paler, and obviously, everything's a royal purple.  Pearls in her hair, some big blue gem, fancy fan.  I made her sleeves darker than her torso, but maybe it shows up a little much?

Getting tired, so I'll have to make this my last of the night.

I have stuff to do tommorow, so I won't have a lot of free time again to go blowing a whole day on art until Wednesday or Thursday.

That looks fantastic, and the sleeves look great too!

OK, even though I have a presentation tommorow that I really, totally, absolutely SHOULD be working on, I went ahead and did a priestess naga.  Since it's a fairly simple design, I went with the miko style (which is basically white and red robes and a white and red hair ornament).

I went ahead and made the hair and scales red to boot, but it makes it a little hard to tell the difference between her skirt and her tail, so I haven't shaded or added transparencies, yet, and can change the colors on the character so that she'd have different colored hair and scales, if you so chose.  Since I was going "miko", I could do very dark (as dark as would reliably show up) brown-red for scale color, although I could also make her blonde.

For funsies, here's another lineup:

Oh, and looking up what color patterns desert snakes have, there's quite a range of colorations for desert snakes: http://www.supiri.com/nature/animals/desert-snakes/

The ring-neck snake, especially - it's "bland" side is a sort of pale mossy green, then it has a bright orange/red belly.

The miko is cute, but maybe a plain white with a red belt would show up better as a sprite?

That's some interesting desert snakes, very colorful ring-neck, but it seems to entirely depend on what they blend into.  I'm not sure what environment is mottled green, yellow, and red with black specks though....

Also, go do presentation!  Geeze!

Of course it will!  What's the use of modding something if you're not gonna brag about it? :3

OK, did some touch-ups, then.

For comparison, the old is on the left, the new (with shading and white under-skirt) is on the right.

Much better, but try making the red part 1 pixel thick, to make a belt.  I think that will look a lot better.

But then it's not miko-style at all...  Can't it at least have some red hip-flaps?

Comparison in the above edited post.

OK, I want to try out some palette swaps while I'm at it...  Comparing to the unshaded version, so that I don't have to shade things again.  It's faster when there's no shading to worry about.

A selection of semi-natural snake-person colors (whatever that means), and some of the blues and purples for comparison.  Some of these are more desaturated than others, obviously.  Just to see how much of a difference that makes...

So, for example, metalsmith colors are grey, and we could just give metalsmiths grey clothes, or have them have grey hair, and then a matching clothing color.

I had fun with my Stonehall Alliance mod without it really making much of an impact.  Of course, I didn't go beyond the stonehall races, but it was fun for me just having snake-people and spider-people and minotaurs alongside dwarves.

The red skirt looks pretty good when it's not on a red snake, and even looks pretty good on the dark red.  Now that I've faced with palettes, I'm debating if I like the blue or purple more, and make them ocean-side dwellers with natural swimming (perhaps amphibious?).  I do like the dark red more than the light red, but all those colors are so nice!  Blue might be a better choice though, since crafters are blue and that sorta makes it seem like the whole race is more crafty, right?

In fact yeah, let's go with that.  River snakes!  Just so you can have your miko :P

Lizards can be brightly colored, even in the desert.  Not all creatures need camoflauge.  They could be brightly-colored and diverse Naga of Paradise in the rainforest.

It's not like humans blend into much of anything very well.  Human skin pigmentation varied mostly by geographical intensity of sunlight, not an ability to blend in.  Hair color didn't have any real apparent drivers, as far as I can recall.

Fair enough, but I always imagined them trying to blend, and they seem to do this more often than not.  Also, that first link to "desert snakes" was a link to hair color, seems you slipped up there.
