Can grass grow inside in desert biomes?
« on: March 19, 2011, 01:35:31 am »

I brought along some elk birds and goats, thinking that it would (tropical warm badlands), and it grew on the ramp down to my entrance....and that's all.

Only on the first ramp too. It's only late summer but my herbivores have already starved, will grass grow later on so I can get some more from a caravan?

Cheers

Breach the caverns and all underground soil tiles should eventually get grassed due to spores etc.

You brought grazers to a desert.  What were you expecting to happen?

For aboveground grass you need aboveground tiles. Make some aboveground tiles. Make some tiles aboveground.

If you want desert livestock, bring chickens(ducks, turkeys, etc.), which don't need to graze and have children by the volley.

On a related note, are the plants you can grow in an above-ground plot determined by temperature or by biome? (Can you grow above ground plants in a tundra by running magma on the level under them to heat them up??)

you'll need to breach the caverns, I'm playing a desert fort as well and I brought herbivores.

I believe we're talking about full scale colonisation here.  You don't just leave all your shit in the van when you move house.

By biome - mountains, oceans, lakes, tundras, and glaciers can't grow aboveground plants.

Personally, I am on a desert made up of fire clay and basalt.

Grass is growing in vertical bands, 8 tiles large on the surface, but it's growing continuously in the moat i built. It's weird.

Aww :/ I wanted my greenhouse full of strawberries. (My current fort is in a tundra/mountain)

Lol, yes, I still wasn't considering that herbivores need to be fed now.

I breached the caverns anyhow, but things won't grow on the rock tiles I dug out, only on soil tiles (And really, really slowly.)

Bought some grizzly bears though, and they seem to breed like crazy so they're my main food source.

EDIT: After a flash of inspiration looking at my single ramp covered in grass, I channeled out an oblong in my soil, and lo and behold needle grass and baby toes succulent sprouted forth from the earth.

This is a view from 1 Z-level above. The green dots are grass tiles underneath.

It has to be in direct sunlight apparently, but it works. So if anyone wants to embark in a desert biome with herbivores (For whatever reasons), then just channel out a pasture for yourself. Doesn't seem to work if the channeled earth is anything but soil. The sandstone has nothing sprouting from it.

I got this, too.  Did you use an older version of dfhack?  Or is it just like that? If you never used dfcleanmap (the versions that remove broken arrows), we've found a bug in the grass code.

Here also, and it reverts to all grass when I channel the top layer off. Does anyone have an explanation?
