It can observe, yes, but I believe the outside observer is the point of the experience. You could just s easily ask if a gray rock stayed grey or turned bright magenta when you didn't look.

The one thing I never understood about the cat in a box analogy is that the cat WILL die at a specific point, we just don't know when. It's never is a super-position state of both. For a long time I figured that quantum physics was just something that we couldn't see. From what I understand now, I think the particles actually do go into two places at once until there is a reason for them to be in one place or the other. My mind is bent.
