Be the Elder Brain
« on: March 18, 2011, 12:36:15 pm »

So yeah, made by a df fan, you take the role of a elder brain leading his illithid community to dominion over the underdark, still in the very early stages of development but look pretty promising. I had some fun attacking and then enslaving gnomes with my former grimlock illithids. Then I opened a chamber with a giant swarm of dwarves, and my green brain chamber goo dissapeared for some reason and the dwarves proceeded to crush my entire budding settlement in a truly dwarven manner. After that I killed them all with my awesome mind powers of course.

I suppose tha summarises it well, though it is much more basic currently and adds its own unique twist.

Oh man I love that song. Started a new settlement, currently digging my way to a juicy halfling cave. Currently it seems about all you can do is dig and kill/devour/enslave/impregnagate other creatures. Still pretty cool though.

EDIT: And I somehow managed to break the game, wouldn't accept any more orders and escape menu didn't work. All that worked was the pause button.

EDIT2: Elder brain just got killed another new settlement my actual defeat how it's supposed to happen I take it. Other time was when I lost all my minions and decided the instant spawn was a bit cheaterish, and when the game stopped accepting commands.

EDIT3: Whoops, just realized the last update was over two years ago, this is probably abandoned, which is sad.

This is actually not all that bad of a premise. With an Elder Brain to defend it might be a tinge closer to the old Dungeon Keeper genre: elder brain == dungeon heart; psychic powers == ethereal presence watching over the dungeon (also allowing you to possess your minions; telekenesis/kinetics == various magic spells. Very similar but with enough potential gimmicks to put its own stamp on the genre; games in other genres have certainly been cloned with less enthusiasm.

I'm not too keen on another ASCII fortress game, but I understand how the simple character graphics allows developer(s) to concentrate a lot more not only on simply coding the mechanics, but also coming up with complex mechanics without having to worry about how you're going to articulate the interaction between various 3D models (and to say nothing of the amount of time it takes to produce 3D models to begin with).

I'll be keeping my eye on this.

3d models are nothing. 3d engines are a bitch.

Hate to break it too some of you but you obviously havent read all the posts, the last time the guy working on it posted was 2009.  We will probably have to call this one dead.   Pity, the idea is great.

Demonic Spoon already mentioned that.

And I was already wondering about people stating "following this". Sheesh.
