Well I only have a screenshot of the gold being there because I had been talking to my friend Andrew on MSN when I struck the gold but the hematite was on another fortress and I didn't think much of it. There was no bridge over the chasm at the time and either. I have a CMV file showing it, but don't know how to put it on here

What great luck! I believe this can happen in certain mountains when the distance between the river and chasm is larger than normal.

Me too, but no sign of gold yet.

Good thing I have this early, I didnt want my four charcoal to be lost sometime in the near future.

(Im on a god damn glacier. What kind of dwarf goes to live on a glacier)

In order to make sure I don't use wood (and keep it from any strange moods) on wood-starved maps, I usually build a (tower-cap) bridge right outside. Then I disassemble them when I'm ready to get my furnace on.

I've done the same thing with obsidian too...
