The game is really, really unfair...
It game's not unfair, it just doesn't stricly enforce a sorting algorithm of evil - There are lots of dangerous creatures and the player starts out at level 1. In lots of other games the player doesn't reach any enemies until they are strong enough to take them on, but there are areas available from the start of BG1 that can prove quite lethal to low level characters.

If you're referring to Jreendus's post, then he is in one of these areas, at a low level, playing a solo character in a game designed for parties, playing a class that is notoriously weak at low levels.

Whoops I meant And not Wand.  Anyway who should I use the +1 intellect book I just found on?  Note the main character is like a 3 int.  Should I use it on dyna to raise her to 18?

The main is the only character to be carried over into the second game, so if you use the state tome on any non-main characters you will get severly diminished results from it.

Note that INT is desirable for non-mages in some places in BG2.

Very well all books I find go to the main!  Note I'm not gonna Faq this first run through this all unless I'm annoyed with a specific thing I find.  Otherwise it'd just ruin it for me.  I've failed to enjoy a number of games cause I needed to faq all the time.

I can only add that each non-mage character should have X5+1 Int. It helps. Alot.

The opposing force usually has a statistical advantage over the player.  On the other hand, the player is several orders of magnitude more intelligent and adaptable.  The player can also exploit various bugs and game engine limitations, unlike the AI.

Solo insane (difficulty slider) no-reload challenges have been successfully completed in BG2, even with hardcore difficulty mods.  I don't know but strongly suspect the same is true for BG1.  So I'd say the player still has an overwhelming advantage.  If it's too tough for you, try something else (new tactics, new equipment, new party composition, level up).  If all else fails, lower the difficulty slider.

I was actually suprised by how easy  it is to solo sorc, all I really had to do was rest often and use my regenerating health familiar as a decoy. The only reason Sirines are so hard is because they combine 3 horrible traits, I can't hit them with spells they have ranged weaponry and they use a save or lose spell.

Crud this city is big.  I've been in it for several RL days now.  Anyone recommend any quests to look out for?  I don't want to Faq skim and ruin it all but some hints would be cool.

Don't be afraid to enter every building you find - there's lots of stuff that you won't find out about otherwise. I would reccomend staying away from the main plot until you've done the sidequests, so avoiding the flaming fist building and the iron throne building would do that. Don't be afraid to go to ulgoth's beard once you've done the BG sidequests - you should be approaching the levels where that is appropriate at the point.
