The game inspects your inventory when you start a new game in BG2. There are three items that change depending on what you have in your main character's inventory (four technically). Don't worry about it, but for the sake of completeness, I have a few tips about what should be on your main character at the end of the game

Ok cool I have none of those.  I just entered chapter 4, I'm still in the tent.  Which should I go grab now if any?

Ok I massacred and sacked the rest of the bandit camp via forced attacks.  Hopefully this is totally not gonna break anything later lol.

God, I thought that I killed the game when I accidentally killed Tazok in the camp. Luckily, that was just because of the NPC Project from BG1 which lets you kill Tazok there while Kivan is in the party.

Honestly that would make it difficult for casters to concentrate.

Ok I need to support either Talos or Umberlee.  Is either vastly better?  It's that bowl quest.

Actually a more important question.  When is a good time to head over to mess with the BG I expansion?

I think that there's a fairly reasonable strength jump between the core game and the expansion. Save it towards the end parts as I remember a shitload of werewolves or something like that.

Also the forest full of Basalisks I assume I should save for later :P  And the Firewine bridge.

I bought the good aligned mage robe at half price (20 rep) which was sweet.  I also found the siren tome of con and my main now has 19 con :)  Finally I have the wolf transform cloak, is this useless like I think it is?

You should be able to find some... help in the basilisk grove it you look around. Enough help that you'll find the place a cakewalk. They're good experience, too, but be aware that you will have to fight some later on, so you'll want to get a protection from petrification spell at some point.

You probably noticed the talos people seemed a bit shifty. When fighting he umberlee person, after you enough damage to her, she will enter into conversation and should clarify the situation.

As for the expansion stuff, it is a fair bit harder than the rest of it. Generally, the areas to the west of the main north/south path are easier (with the exception of the siren map, that can be quite hard). I would reccoment going through the west side completely before starting on the east side.

Also, did you install tutu/trilogy in the end?

And afterwards you will notice that the Umberlee girl is full of shit too. It's pretty much Evil vs Evil.

Supporting umberlee allows you to fulfill a quest later in the city, though.
