If you've installed tutu/trilogy, then there is an easy way. Hold down tab, and the container will be highlighted in teal.

The ring of wizardry is near the south edge of the FAI map. the ankheg armour is along the left edge of the lower field in nashkel.

I located the armor with an online map.  It came with a free pearl.  I'll get the ring next.

There's a diamond somewhere near where you originally find Montaron, it's in a tree trunk but I can't remember which tree, just near a bend in the road.

The story goes that someone was polymorphed into a tree while weaing it. Also its a +1 ring of protection. Found it by accident.

BG2 Edwin is fantastic AND hilariously funny. I've begun to like him better than my main char. In fact, I am torn with my upcoming playthrough on which class to use, because I *am* going to take Edwin, and as such there's not much point for a pure spellcaster. I was considering a skald/blade with Reckless Dweomer LUA'ed in for when I absolutedly need to cast a high level spell with my main char, but I'm thinking that I might as well forego that and go for a ranger or a bounty hunter.

Yeah I'll likely roll anew for BGII just because of all the new options.  Also I went to High Hedge.  I can afford the severed hand thingy or the horn.  Should I buy one of them or save my cash?

Because I never got around to doing it, I suggest someone does a mage-only run (BG or BGII), just for the hell of it. Either use the mages originally in the game, or make up the numbers with multiplayer. Bonus conditions: The PC can't be a fighter-mage of any description, and/or you can't multiclass NPCs to mage and call them mages.

In BG1 this is borderline suicidal, as the low level mages you get are too sucky for consideration. In BG2 this is more doable (heck, there are solo sorcerer guides around) albeit traps and the like might pose some problems. The Drow are likely to be annoying too.

Regarding BG1, that was mainly the point. You can always turn the (utterly artifical) difficulty level up for BGII.

Reminds me of one of the wild magic expansion mods that had a level ~9? wild mage (with unique spells, including one that was basically a "symbol of wild surges", and two +2 daggers) teleport in right on top of you the first time you rested. It was designed to be used with BG1. Yeah. My basic strategy was to give everyone a bow and try to make sure I didn't get corralled/massacred instantly by area effects, and hope that he managed to entangle himself or something (I think he once diseased himself to 1 str and couldn't move any more, which was amusing).

Solo sorceror?  Pfft!  How about a solo mage?

That's a fun read, by the way.

How about a Solo Insane Poverty run?
Wonder if anyone here will try it :)

Nope. Monk is too limited. You can't harm anything with +4 resistance or greater till lv 21. You can't open locks (and i'm pretty sure that that will cause some major problems, especially with a max strength of 18 (due to no items)). If a mage cast immunity from magical weapons, your screwed. With the difficulty on insane, you will be taking massive damage from some monsters (notably dragons will both A) outdamage you B) have prot from magical weapons meaning you can't hurt them at all for like first 20 rounds of battle).
And what would you do against vampires? You have no way to restore levels (You can't go to the temple to do it because its against the spirit of the rules, you can't use scrolls because no items) or protect from level drain.
Mindflayers (no protection from int drain available)?
Beholders (some imprison you)?
DemiLich (granted you never have to fight one on the main quest)?

It's easily the best option. Nothing else even comes close.

- You're going to be running away from things all the time no matter which class you choose (and Monks get intrinsic speed bonuses, making that a lot easier).
- The only feasible class that can open locks is some form of Fighter/Thief (or Swashbuckler, they're basically the same thing), and you shouldn't need to do it too much anyway (Actually, I don't think I can remember a single door that 1. can't be bashed easily and 2. is plot-vital in some manner). You're going to be rolling high stats for something as involved as this, so I wouldn't be surprised if the PC started with 18/19 STR.
- Immunity from magical weapons: see first point.
- You don't have to fight a dragon until ToB, at which point they'll be vastly less painful due to the PC being stupidly powerful by then.
- What do you suggest? Cleric? Excuse me while I laugh.
- Nobody has protection from intelligence drain. It goes through stoneskin and (if I remember correctly) Mantle/weapon prot. spells. Monks are far better equipped to be fighting that sort of thing regardless, especially when unarmed.
- Elder orbs/demiliches/imprisonment in general: see first point.

Edit: Oh, and did I mention that Monks have access to hide, move silently, and detect traps?

Na, sorcerer>monk for solo.

Monk's speed bonus<Haste (which a sorcerer can get)
Intelligence drain only has a effect if it hits you, it won't go through mantle/weapon prot spells (it might be non-magical, in which case you would just use a prot from normal weapons).

The Level drain is a much worse problem since it's permanent, unless your saying that you could play a entire game with only getting hit 1 or two times by a vampire, then i don't see any way to survive.

A monk, unlike other fighters, can't start with a higher strength then 18 (although i suppose a half orc might let you push it up to 19)
Mages/sorc's can open locks with knock (spell).

Yeah, you don't have to fight a dragon till ToB, but i just don't see how you can kill Abazigal without a way to dispel immunity from magical weapons (or surviving the 20 or so rounds till he runs out, but i don't think that that would be feasible with a solo that can't even use any healing potions).
Also, I don't really see how you could go through the whole mellisan battle with only using lay on hands, with healing potions i could see it easily, or with items that give regeneration over time, but without any of those (or a way to completely avoid taking damage), dunno how you could do it.

Edit: Oh, and did I mention that Monks have access to hide, move silently, and detect traps?
Sorcerers have access to detect invisibility, true sight and invisibility.

tl;dr
Sorcerer>Monk
How would you counter level drain?

EDIT:
Perhaps most importantly, i couldn't imagine a solo monk run being anything but ridiculously boring the whole time, due to the complete lack of any strategy (and would just be watching your dude punch them the whole time, especially without using any items)
