I just found Xan... I totally don't want 2 mages...

Update.  He does have a flaming sword though which is kinda cool.  But I'll keep my options open.

You kidding? Jaheira is even more annoying in BG2 than BG1. I'd advise to leave her jailed if it wouldn't prevent people from massacring the harpers later on.

So it seems like I could easily get Kivan at least.  But I think I'm gonna go with the pally as he isn't a jerk about leaving the party and crying foul as Kivan allegedly is.  Besides my party is good aligned and hey paladin!

Also those 4 ladies that ambush you after the mine were really freaking hard.  Was I supposed to run from them?  I killed them but Branwhen and Imohen needed a raise dead after.  I also needed to load a few times.

You would preferably be about lvl 4 or 5 before being able to take them on without any deaths. They're essentially a trap for anyone who thought that the previous bounty hunters were easy.  I can guarantee that they'll kick anyones ass at low levels.

The previous bounty hunters aren't easy. The one you meet at Friendly Arm is a nasty piece (because his magic missiles can easily kill any of your early characters in one blast)

He's only nasty if he gets off mirror image. You also have all of the guards around who can easily wreck his shit.
Also, are you sure that he knows Magic Missile? All that he's ever cast against me are Mirror Image, Horror and Chromatic Orb (although I might be wrong with the last one).

I'm sure he knows magic missile. The first times I played through BG1 I avoided Friendly Arm like the plague because he was there. I just grabbed Xzar and Montaron and went south.

Yeh he has magic missile, I normally turn him hostile then run so that the guards can kill him. No point in risking death if you don't have to.

He was level 3. I think you should get more than 40 so experience...

And anyway, that is why you use buffs at low levels.

Easy to avoid, what you do is run to a building with a door, and when he casts/starts to cast it, just go in. Switching areas will stop the spell from affecting you. Just rinse and repeat till he runs out of magic missile.

Some munchkin-like tips for the game:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, if you don't want story NPCs to join you, you can go full PC party, just start a multiplayer game. If the start screen annoys you every time you load, you can move the newly created saved game to the Single Player save folder and it'll work just fine.

When I did that, I played an all-female party with sexy voices and lots of nude fantasy art pics I found around :D

Yeah, human kensai-mage was brought up here a lot. It looks like the most unbalanced versatile build ever :P.

I have to say, if you know how to do the mage part correctly, the kensai part will never be used. All it does is delay your mage progression.
