I know there's a tweak in the gibberlings 3 pack that has an option for an "evil" discount, there's probably more tweaks to make the campaign more flexible for evil characters, but I've never tried one so I can't say for sure.

Yep, I was GM in many campaigns where I didn't have time to write a complex plot sidebranches while I spent a lot of time perfectioning the "good" line, so once my players started to act stupid and greedy, I punished them here and there so they had to stick to the "good party" label. It's not a good move, but I've never claimed I am a good GM :P.

Well, nobody can come along and say "You encouraged them to do horrible evil things! You monster! Think of the children!"

I would start anew in the sequel. Kensai multi-classed as thief is rather powerful. It will allow you to eventually wear armor, yet still hit like the Kensai glass-cannon. Kensai and mage is also a potent array of offensive options, and the protective mage spells compensate for the unarmored Kensai.

going from BG1 to BG2, I'd go with pure mage. It's harder in the first game due to the low level-cap, but once you get into the high levels in BGII, you're a walking artillery package.

I never had BG 1. I played BG 2 and the expansion all the way through though. The above advice is good. I absolutely loved having mage duels with NPC mages. If you do Kensai/mage, memorize a bunch of various defensive spells along with Breach type spells and you will do really well. Also, I went dual axes with the Kensai, and was not disappointed at all. This is because there is a very nice ax that has a history with Duergar, and it's toggle-able between returning throwing and melee. There was also a very nice vorpal 1h ax.

Yay for axes.  Also I know what vorpal does but what does a weapon with "Phasing" do?  I just got a shortsword with it in Ice Wind dale and it has a 10% rate.  It does make the enemy blurry but I'm not sure what else.

I think it ignores 10% of armor, but Icewind dale is different from this.

I enjoyed having a bastard sword that cast mirror drain on each hit, gave my paladin large amounts of extra health.

Ok how about ranged weapons?  Should I bother with anything except bows in BG?  Icewind Dale keeps turning out good crossbows that noone has proffs for and like 0 enchanted bows (save trash short bows) but most enchanted ammo is arrows not bolts.  (I know slings will be used by my clerics/druids so I'm gonna avoid those on the main (unless main is cleric or druid)).  Also what weapon groups are totally worthless if any?  IWD is turning out stuff for all sorts so far even a sweet +5 Taco dagger, and my female paladin has 2 +2 swords and my male pally has a nice +2 axe but it took till level 6-7 for my flail using cleric to even get an enchanted weapon and that seems bad.

I remember two good bows in BG2... Sadly I can't remember unique crossbows. It doesn't mean that they are not there, but I really liked those bows :).

In BG1, ranged weapons are very good, and all your party members should have one.  At the very least, it allows all your party members to get in an attack before melee combat starts.

However, you need to be careful of other enemies with ranged attacks. BG1 allows your character to travel to almost any location in the game right from the start, so it is very possible for your first level character to find themselves up against very tough enemies. Dryads, in particular, can be very dangerous, with poisinous arrows and charm and invisibility spells.

In BG2, ranged weapons become less important. By that point, your spellcasters have enough spells per day to be able to throw a couple ones out at every encounter, so they don't need ranged weapons so much. Your warriors can still use them, but a single arrow attack is not likely to be a decisive in an encounter.

In BG1, magic weapons are not hugely common - it is meant for low-level characters. The highest enchantment that most people will see is a single +3 weapon. Even at the end of the game, a  number of the weapons you will be using will be only +1.

In BG2, magic weapons are a lot more plentiful. There are magic weapons for pretty muich every type, so you don't need to worry about that (but don't go far katanas - not only will you have no katanas in BG1, but it will be a long time before you get good ones in BG2.

Burning stones are awesome for mages :). They save magic missiles.

Stoneskin is a necessity as a mage. However, THat's fourth level so it'll take a while. Hold Person is quite nice since I'm pretty sure the mage version hits multiple people.

So I went with a Fighter for BG 1.  I'm playing it pure for now.  My party is currently Imoen, Minsc, Dynahair, and Branwen.  I ditched Edwin to open up a slot for the future and as he isn't much help right now anyway.  I also ditched Jaheira/that guy as they were kinda shoddy.  Getting the cleric pretty much eliminated the need for a druid as healing was all important.

I will, in BG II where she looks better and has crappy Kalid removed.  Seriously he's a fighter that can barely carry his own armor, and he looks weaselly.  I do need a final party member though and am open to suggestions.
