Baldur's Gate
« on: March 18, 2011, 12:03:01 am »

I just ordered the 4 DVD pack.  Meaning all of the original Baldur's Gate games and the expansions.

I well know they are awesome but only demo played borrowed copies in the past.

So what race/class should I play as?  Also should I do the import character thing to #2 or make a new one for better options?

Also the big question.  What glorious weapon class should I choose to focus on?

I would start anew in the sequel. Kensai multi-classed as thief is rather powerful. It will allow you to eventually wear armor, yet still hit like the Kensai glass-cannon. Kensai and mage is also a potent array of offensive options, and the protective mage spells compensate for the unarmored Kensai.

If you mean all 4 games (BG1, TotSC, BG2, ToB) then I suggest getting the Baldur's Gate Trilogy mod. It lets you play Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast in the BG2 engine, and has a transition between the BG1 and BG2. It still had some issues back when I played, but from what I've read it looks to be working good now. Been a while since I played through it all, but I remember enjoying being able to use the BG2 features in BG1 (being able to highlight selectable items and the various other interface improvements). I've been meaning to go back and play it all again myself, and this thread might just get me to do it :D

You can find it over at
http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/bgt

And theres a big readme for it here:
http://readme.spellholdstudios.net/BGTReadme.htm

Funny thing to note, on that site the Infinity engine modding (BG, BG2, IWD, etc) has more recent posts than the modding for NWN and Oblivion.

Oh that sounds good.  I want item highlight and if it lets me take the BG II classes in BG I, I think I'll go for it.  I was playing Icewind Dale earlier and the lack of item highlight annoyed me.

I don't think it's really a must-have, but there are some fan fixes that can be of worth here, as well as some misc add-ons worth browsing through. http://www.gibberlings3.net/

Only issue is that you need to do a bit of reading and sorting through what you do and don't want in the fix/tweak packs. Not a big deal though.

going from BG1 to BG2, I'd go with pure mage. It's harder in the first game due to the low level-cap, but once you get into the high levels in BGII, you're a walking artillery package.

Baldur's Gate is a great the best series. Has a great modding community too.

For classes and race. I would go with a human (for dual classing) and a kensai dualed over to wizard at around level 8 or so. With 18/00 strenth and 18 int with and as much dex as you can sink into it, you'll be a killing machine. Buff, timestop, hellball, stab.
Elven Ranger with the Archer pack is the best long range slayer, if you like that. Kensai Half-orc is prehaps the best warrior. Swashbuckler is (for me) the best theif as I find it annoying to suffle my party around all the time to get backstabs. Skald is the best bard by far. Don't bother picking a cleric/druid, half the party members in the game has devine spells (Viconia is the best). Never go witha  pure mage, unless you're specialising in a field or want one of the "unique" kits (sorc, wildmage), a dualled mage/fighter will have a ton more hp and won't die so easily.

Weapons depend on what game you're playing. If you're going with a warrior class, it's generally better to dual weapons since you can get 2x the benefits that some weapons give you. If you're playing BG1 then the weapons can't process past +2, so any are good. For BG2 theres now legendary weapons, so it's best to pick one of those such as a longsword for the Equaliser. BG2:ToB has even better super weapons, Bloodletter is great, so I sink points into Bastardswords.

However, in the end pick what you want. Since it's a party based rpg you can get away with any class if you balance your party well enough, it's not a hard game.

Trilogy mod is great as well. The orginal Baldur's gate gameplay can get annoying (no stacks of arrows above 20, no gems stacking).

If you want an easy play from the very beginning till the very end, choose a Cleric / Ranger.

It has no "tough" moments, unlike sorcerer which i recommend for second play  :D

Every time I create a character in Baldur's gate it somehow ends up as a chaotic good ranger. Sort of like how I can't get myself to play the "evil" path in KoTOR.

I think dual/multis tend to be somewhat boring. (And duals in particular aI're rather twinkish, but that's just me).

I'd go for a wizard/sorcerer if I were you. If you want to do some lightweight combat too, get a bard kit (skald, blade), or go thief/mage.

Also, depending on where you are you might want to set memory access=100 or disintegrate and other spells wont work as intended.

I have played baldurs gate many times before.

There are lots of people who are advising you to use the trilogy expansion to play through the first game. There is another option, which is called tutu. I have played them, both, and I would advise you using tutu instead of trilogy. My reasons are as such:
-Tutu allows you to play the content of the first game in the engine of the second. This gives, but is not limited to:
--A larger screen resolution
--Larger stacks of items
--More modding opportunities
--Other useful features (e.g. you can hold down tab to highlight containers
-Tutu also has the following advantages over trilogy:
--More mod support
--Different mods and settings used in BG1 and BG2 (this is a big one. For example, in BG2 you are given experience for unlocking traps and learning spells from scrolls. In BG2, this experience is minor, but it can be completely game-breaking in BG1. With trilogy you can only set one experience value for both halves of the game, but with trilogy you can set appropriate levels for BG1 and BG2.)
--Less buggy

You may not want to play many mods the first time round, but I would reccomend that you get the patch and the bugfixes mod. If you are interested in modding, then gibberlings3 has lots for your use.

Lots of people have reccomended that you go for a mage or a kensai build (or something similar). Mages can be powerful, but using them properly is very hard. If you have not played the game before and do not know the spell system, or good combinations of spells, you are going to most likely be very frustrated with your experience playing as a mage, especially at low levels. The same goes for kensai: At high levels, in the hands of someone who knows how to get the most out of it, they can be powerful, but for the inexperienced they will result in a lot of irritating deaths.

I would reccomend that you go for an elven ranger/cleric dual-wielding warhammers. You will get cleric spells, druid spells, and be a powerful tank.

Finally, if oyu have the same 4 DVD pack as I have, then you will not have a physical manual. You can find a PDF in the install directory.

Yeah, BIG METAL UNIT FTW!

Also, use TUTU instead of Trilogy. It's much more stable. Also get both Unfinished Business mods as they add in a lot of content that was supposed to be in.
