Hello.
Since 2d, Boatmurdered pulled me right into it.

i had a "Game Depression".
No Games with substance, everything felt "shallow", it was like in the picture with casual/hardcore/dwarf fortress.

I remember the first 2 days.
Tested it, deleting it...5 Hours later i downloaded it again.
Then i began to understand the symbols...and i began to "see".

Dying in the first Winter...setting up my first farm...good times.
I can't wait for the next releases.
Every new Version makes the Game better, but i really wish we had some sort of 2d Mode, like the old days, i miss that a little.

Sorry for my bad English, not my first language, i hope you understand some of my gibberish.

I've started playing a week or so before the update with aimed attacks in adventure mode. I think that update was 0.31.18

I picked it up shortly after Boatmurdered was posted. I only played in 2D for a few months, then put it down and bided my time until DF3D came out. Then... I played an unholy everloving shitload of this game. For a short time, Minecraft pulled me away, but it got stale really quick. DF didn't so I'm back yet again. I only wish this game had multiplayer of some kind, but I myself admit I wouldn't know how to do that.

I've been around so long that I'm pretty sure I played the first couple of versions, stopped for a while, started playing df_27_169_33a (oldest version that I can still find on my computer, although it got corrupted.), stopped for a while again then started playing a lot more once 40d first came out.

I've only read like, 2 pages of boatmurdered.  Not sure why I never bothered to read more.

I first heard about the game when I found 3 panel soul(maybe?  Perhaps a different webcomic) and read through the archive.  Some of them were about DF.  I believe I started playing in like, September of 2009, because I remember playing it a little, and following the development prior to 31.01.  I think I've always been more interested in how the game grows than actually playing it, since I've never had a fort last more than a few years before I abandon it to try something new.  Adventure mode suits me better.

Yeah, that happens sometimes.  ;)

I started playing sometime during 40d. The game was 3d, but I think I remember one or two updates happening before the current version. This leads be to believe that I started playing just before the drought happened. Or, possibly just after.

I first started playing fortress mode sometime in 2008. The first big update I remember is the one that allowed you to designate more than one wall at a time, or something like that.

If we're talking about when I first heard about Dwarf Fortress, well, that was in a long dead forum, shortly after the first public release. People were complaining about the GUI, and how it made no sense. I thought to myself "well, that sounds annoying. Not for me." What a fool I was, etc.

Just before 0.31.01 came out, so about a year.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

Since 40d. Around early 2009 perhaps? Sometime just before the vets started to reminisce about the good old regular-update days. The pace of change since .31 has been a bit of a shock (:
