Just survived my first ever siege
« on: March 17, 2011, 04:05:39 pm »

At least twelve goblins attacked my fortress. They're attack came as my military was engaging a fearsome Forgotten Beast. The military finished off the creature and then rushed to the fortress's defense. If they hadn't been down in the mines they'd have been in the perfect position to defend the fortress. Unfortunately, since my mines are not directly attached to my fortress, they had to go through enemy lines to get to the fortress. So they ended up meeting the enemy at the entrance to my fortress. The battle was bloody with several of our men falling to the enemy. However, in the end we were victorious. We captured four of the enemy and as I am typing this the order has been given to execute them by dwarven atom smasher (after having looted all they're possessions).

However I didn't make this thread just to regale you with war stories. Though I have had several fortresses none before have received sieges. I am wondering why. Many have had large (80+) populations. Some have had very large amounts of created wealth. But why is this the first to receive a siege?

Luck.  Good or bad luck is open to interpretation, but it seems some get sieges and some don't.

One must also remember to make sure that there are other civilizations hanging around which might send sieges.

What level of created wealth are you talking about? On my forts I usually have around 10 million created wealth at 50 or so dwarves and get a siege at around 70. Also, I believe embarking further away from goblin territory reduces the chance of the siege.

Theres always humans for a good fight though.

Did your other fortresses have goblin thieves? Maybe your forts lacked access from the goblin civ.

Also, the default world gen option, islands, tends to cut civs off from each other so that you lose access to goblins at all on one or more of the continents. It certainly happens a lot to me, annoyingly. Try generating worlds in regions instead.
