Efficient Use of Adamantine
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:32:05 pm »

I've struck and carefully begun to extract adamantine in my fortress, I've built up a bridge that can instantly seal off the fort from the vein and the lever is in a high traffic area should I need to hit it immediately.  I've been smoothing and fortifying the adamantine so I don't accidentally have too much fun.  I've managed to snag out about 30 wafers.

I have a fort of 110 dorfs.
My military is about 25-30

What should I do with my sparse supply of adamantine?  I almost think weapons may be a waste because I have an ABUNDANCE of steel, I could practically build an above ground fort entirely out of steel I have so much and I just use that for the weapons and armor.

What should I use my adamantine for?

Create the ultimate clown-threshing machine with adamantine gear.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Don't use it at all. Sometimes dwarves in strange moods use adamantine to make the most awesome artifacts of the game.

Who knows? Maybe you will get an adamantine axe!

If you do intend to attack Hell itself, armor and/or slashing/piercing weapons.

Heh, even if you do not intend to. Adamantine is too sparse to waste on the caravan or nobles.

And give it only to legendary armorers/weaponsmiths of course. Or, as stated before, non-legendary moody armorers/weaponsmiths.

Just hope for the weaponsmith not to make a blunt weapon out of it...

Warhammers. Let it be known to all your dwarves that Armok provides high value weapons for all hell explorers.

Iron, bronze, and especially steel will provide great protection against almost anything that's going to be thrown at you. So I'd recommend using the adamantine on spears, swords, axes, or maybe special moods. An adamantine artifact can be very valuable, but you have no control over what is going to be made. Also, from what I understand, weapon quality only affects accuracy now, and a legendary +5 axedwarf isn't going to miss much anyways, so you will only get but so much out of an artifact weapon as opposed to a masterwork one if you have a well trained military.

If you don't mind abusing the mechanics of the game, you need to build a target range for adamantine arrows to be used, recovered, and then melted back down. In this way, you get MOAR ADAMANTINE! It's tough to get more efficient than CREATING it.

This was actually another problem I'd been having issues with lately with Archery ranges.  I tried to build an archery range for my marksdwarfs to use that would recycle their bolts.  I built a line of targets, designated them all as archery targets, told the squads to use them for training, and then dug a channel out in front of all of them to collect falling bolts.  Now they just don't train at those targets.  :[

You build the channel BEHIND and TO THE SIDE of the target not in front of they need to be able to path to the target ,  also you want your worst marksdwarves doing the shooting preferably someone blind if you have a dwarf like that.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

They only train if they have a direct path to their target, but they'll shoot at anything within range.  You can aid the recycling process by putting a hatch in front of the target, and Pull the Lever /R on it.  With channels to the side of the target, they'll catch any misses, and ~1/2 of the hits should be recovered as well.  Someone else made a thread on recycling bolts, and now that I've mentioned it, someone will go find the link.  It basically involved having a line of doors/floodgates in front of the targets, which would close at the exact right moment to block the bolts and save them.

What happens when you meet a steel forgotton beast, eh?

Adamantine weapons. And armour. Making almost anything else out of adamantine is a waste. As weapons and armour, adamantine can do things nothing else can.

That said, I've been known to use it to make lovely wells, roads and such before. Roads are a good choice, because you can always unbuild them and reclaim the wafers you used. I made a few adamantine roads to hit the requirement for a capital.

about the only thing i use adamantine for is battle axes for my elite squad of axelords.  They don't get the adamantine axes until they are axelords of course, and the rest of their gear is steel and exotic animal leather (usually unicorn).
