Frustration

So, I seem to have got a pretty stupid group.
(Just one example accompanied by a question, I guess)
The expidition leader fell down a shaft not knowing that it's intended for a waterfall, not dwarves. He ended up breaking his arm and making an explosion of blood. He survived, and I assume he'll be okay. But what about my waterfall? It's going to flow to the underground lake. Is my waterfall going to contaminate the ENTIRE underground lake?

EDIT: Yeah, he's fine as far as I can see. He's stopped passing out, and he only occasionally gets a frame or two of "Pain"

It won't make the lake run reeeeeed with blood, if that's what you mean. I think it'll just be a few tiles with blood in them. If these are not too close to the shore (where your dwarves will presumably be getting water/washing up/having splash fights/whatever), it won't be too much of a problem.

How you gonna get him out of the shaft, by the way?

Oh he fell in luckily before Urist McMiner dug the final channel, meaning he only fell four z levels instead of plumiting the ten z levels to the under-lake.

Heck no, he's fine. He crawled up the flights of stairs safely and got a drink at the wagon. Now he's back to mining at warp speed. All that happened was an explosion of blood and a broken arm.

Sheesh, man, it's easy. Just dig out a room, stick a few beds and chests in it, and make sure you have splints, cloth, and thread available (in the next bug fix, casts and crutches will be fixed, so then, you'll need those to). Designate a hospital zone over this room and watch your dwarves fill up the chests with the necessary materials.

Now, go into the nobles screen and appoint a chief medical dwarf. The one at the top of the list is the dwarf in your fort with the highest skill in diagnosis (diagnosis is required before the patient is treated, even though it should be pretty obvious that he's got, say, an arrow lodged in his left testicle). Appoint him, or anyone else, really.

If all goes well, your wounded dwarves will go to rest in the hospital, get diagnosed, and then fixed up, which may have some delays if your chief medical dwarf has labors turned on besides all the ones in healthcare (hint).

Some dwarves will remain in the hospital for the rest of their lives in the current version - those with broken spines, for instance - but your expedition leader, for example, will be fine.

If you don't have any splints, they can be bought, or made in a carpenter's workshop. Thread and cloth should be obvious. Having a water source (a well) helps in preventing infection somewhat. Soap helps too, much more reliably, but seeing as soap is still bugged, you'd do well to avoid making it, 'cuz otherwise you'll be spammed with your dwarves canceling the clean self job (item inaccesible). If you do make soap for the hospital, dig a dwarven bathtub in an oft-frequented hallway - as your dwarves pass through it, they'll be cleaned, and they won't bother you about the soap.

I took your suggestion, and I was like "Oh, this is working!"

..."Urist McLeader has died from infection."

"Urist McMason has thrown a tantrum!"
"Urist McPeasant has thrown a tantrum!"
"Urist McEngraver has entered a fey mood!"

I'm certain that he didn't get an infection from a broken arm. I think that the surgery wasn't the BEST idea on the dwarf's part.

You said he made an explosion of blood. This is indicative of open wounds. His arm was probably smashed open (broken limbs tend to be), which would lead to infection if not cleaned in a timely fashion. Did you have a well?

Yes, I had a well over a river, so it couldn't have been from stagnant water, either.

Yes, I had a well over a river, so it couldn't have been from stagnant water, either.

Hrrrrrrrrrrrm. Did the doctor have other labours turned on besides healthcare? Could've kept him from cleaning the open wound while he was off making stone crafts or some shit. Alternatively, perhaps the leader's infection already took hold before you made the hospital, and he succumbed to it shortly after the construction of the hospik.

On the upside, you have one less dwarf to feed, and a functioning hospital!

On the downside, you're down one miner. Hope you had more than one, mate.

No, I didn't. Shortly after I made him a majestic grave, my fortress flooded because I forgot about the waterfall.

Oh, also, a giant cave swallow somehow found its way to the top cavern, and slaughtered a few more most of my dwarves.
