How can i make this work (or does it work): Awesome traps
« on: March 17, 2011, 10:53:36 am »

I want to make something like a flamethrower and i had some ideas. Have a look at them and tell me if they work of if they dont (and, if possible, how can i make them work). Ok here we go:
Notes: Temp off while putting hot bars/grates, hot materials are modded in with a high fixed temp
Code: [Select]

1.- Magma flamthrower:
Plan: Putting some horribly hot grate/bars in front of a magma safe screw pump so the magma evaporates into "gaseous magma?" and any goblin near it gets totally bunt.

2.- Stone cooking chamber: Something like a flamethrower, but more like an incendiary bomb
Plan: Something like this:
=#=
#|#
=#=
being = walls or fortifications, # fortifications and | a hot floor grate or hot floor bars

3.- Walking over fire:
Plan: Floor grates made of hot material in a hallway. Just that.

4.-Dwarven pressure cooker or dwarven geyser:
Plan: Seen from the side:

#######=7
.......=7
7777777X7
==========

Where # is a hot floor grate/bars, 7 water, . empty space, X a floodgate or door and = walls or floor if down.

What it does is making water rise suddenly and evaporating it in contact with the grates so the enemies will get cooked in seconds :D

Post your ideas and test mine if you can because i can't test them right now (my good pc is broken :P)

Unfortunately steam doesn't do damage. Also imo dragons in a fortification box make the best flame throwers.

Or maybe there's a god who's just completely insane and sends you to Detroit, Michigan in a new body if you ever utter the name "Pat Sajak".

That's not a flamethrower. That's an explosive MacGyver would make. Oh wait...

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

what i am asking is this:

 DORF GOES HERE-> %%777# (Magma steam?)

being the 7 magma, the # a grate with a extremely high fixed temp and the 2 %% a screw pump:

Does it expell magma steam?

As far as I know, magma won't turn into steam... although there technically is a material definition for "boiling magma" in the gas state...  You're welcome to try it, although good luck getting your dwarves to build a grate made of something that hot.  Fire Imp leather gloves may help.

To create magma mist (which is very deadly) you need to drop a floor or wall tile into a pool of magma. Just be careful and make sure the is a solid wall tile under the magma pool so you don't flood you fortress with magma. Don't worry absolutely nothing can go wrong with this idea.

There should be a capacity for "magma steam" in theory though.  Heated water makes steam, heated magma should make... some sort of stone gas?  The issue is 1) getting it that hot, to actually boil magma, and 2) magma may be hard-coded to prevent boiling.

"Boiling magma" is what you get when stone boils. Try it.

Lots of fire imps in a 1x1 fortification box should be quite useful if by useful you mean "setting the world on fire", and should be a metric fuckton easier to get hold of than dragons.

Ah, but precisely 431 shitloads equal one metric fuckton. A long fuckton requires an exponent.
