Alphas dont get cloaks, so you know... kind of hard to survive WH space being a noob.

Since you have to drop cloak to hack stuff, the cloak isn't all that essential to the exploration process.  Anyone who's hunting is going to know you're there when they see your probes, and later when you start hacking, it's not all the useful for survival.  Cloaks are very useful for hunting down explorers, but besides maybe cloaking up when you see something on D-Scan (and hoping they haven't already seen you on D-scan), they really don't make much of a difference anyway.  Noobs would be better served learning how to make safe spot bookmarks, which is actually safer than cloaks since you can't be bumped out of stealth (And if you see combat probes then obviously you should be heading to the nearest exit anyway)

Cloaks are ABSOLUTELY a survival item.  You can find a spot and then cloak there.  Roving hunters will perform a d-scan, find nothing because you're cloaked, and leave.  And if you encounter NPC sleepers/pirates/whatever you can just cloak.  And if approach a site at 100km only to find someone, you can cloak as you arrive to try and evade them.  It's all a game of chance, they might be able to target you from 100km before you can cloak, or as soon as they arrive they may lock you and prevent cloak, or they may have warp scramblers, or anything.  You can always fail.  But coming with a cloak makes you fail less.

I suppose it can open up some options, but if you're not using a covert ops ship I find cloaking underwhelming.  You can do all those things, but NPCs are only going to be a problem if you're warping to the wrong sites, and if you're in W-Space then you should assume the gangs are based in the system and you should move on rather than wait them out.  Lowsec and null exploration has some more nuances like the reputation and corporation affiliation of the people in local, but when in doubt it's smarter to run than hide.

So "EVE:ascension" is free to play now, as part of the Steam autumn sale.  http://store.steampowered.com/app/8500/
It doesn't say demo or whatever.
Did EVE go free to play?
Is it possible to play EVE without spending money on subscription nowadays? I played like, over 10 years ago and had to quit when isk prices for plex became too high for me to be able to earn.

It's indefinite trial. Basically, you're limited to t1 cruisers and down (and similarly for not-flying-ships things), and a lot of t2 modules are off limits, but you can use those things for however long you want.

"Free to Trial".  You can train up to marginal skills, and training takes twice as long as a paid account, but you can keep going for free.  It's not a reliable way to earn plex on an alpha clone, but it's a good way to buffer time between paid periods.

And alpha is incredibly better than trial because in trial you could theoretically sit in a battleship but with no skills to make it worthwhile. In alpha you can fly a reasonably well fit frigate or destroyer.

Trial didn't let you skill up to BSs last I tried. Not that it matters.

That's why I wrote "last time I tried". Been a couple years, and I am pretty sure BS was one of the blocked skills back then. Might misremember, of course.

Yoiul (Yule) Festival freebies start tomorrow EVE time, which is basically now.  No stated restrictions upon alpha accounts re: gifts.

Each day's gifts are only available on that day... so if you're interested, make sure you log in every day to grab 'em.  The gift for Xmas Day will persist a bit longer, as will the New Year's gift.

Sure, join the channel!

We don't have a proper bay 12 corp at the moment, but there is still a bit of cooperation going on.
