That is supposedly their point, to teach people to actually counteract them or do something other than whining about getting ganked.

That said, it's kinda impossible. It's like telling a war dec'd corp's members to just fight the mercs who are sitting on the gate in like five ships ready to instalock and kill you instead of not undocking :P

Several easy counters include.

1. Tanking your ship properly.

2. Jamming them out the moment they aggress.

3. Using an alt to gank them first or having a mate do it.

4. Paying them off.

5. Doing something else (I mean really, hisec mining earns so little you're essentially setting yourself up as a space peasant).

6. Mining somewhere quieter, the vast majority of these ganks happen along major trade routes.

7. Warping off when an obvious ganking ship appears on short range d-scan.

8. Turning the tables on them.  Lay out some juicy looking bait and kill them when they attack it.

9. Mining in mission sites rather than anomalies.  The vast majority of gankers won't bother to probe people down, and even if they do then the probes give you loads of advance warning.

10. Hiring a group to keep them busy.

11. Using logi to repair the incoming damage until Concord shows up.

That's far from an exclusive list of the options available.  The actual issue IMO is that many people are quick to fall into a victim mentality instead of actually taking steps to improve their situation.  "Oh no they blew up my ship, this is terrible.  Better keep doing the exact same thing in the exact same way!"

I wouldn't say that they are 'easy counters' - hiring a group to keep them at bay is going to cost a hell of a lot, paying them off usually doesn't work, and 'doing something else' is sort of against the point.

Yeah, sure, if you're a veteran player you'll know what to do - but then you probably won't be mining. Whilst some people do have a bit of a victim mentality over it, my issue is that Eve doesn't really 'foster emergent gameplay' equally - it's easy to be the 'bad' guy and harder to be the 'good' guy. There's not as many good ways to defend yourself as there are to gank. Lets say they had a bounty system where those on it were fair game anywhere, that'd make people think twice about ganking. Similarly, if you could hire some modestly priced NPCs to help defend you, that'd help as well.

i hate it when people shoot my spaceship in a game about spaceships shooting each other

Not my point at all. In fact, I've never been griefed while mining, personally. Only times I've lost mining ships have been out in low/null-sec or wormholes, places I do not expect to be safe at all. And at least one of those was NPCs anyway.

Really, I just despise bullies. These people act as if the miners should be doing something else as some strange justification of their bullying, but really they are simply jerks who get off on making someone else's day worse for really no reason. Pirates at least want your stuff. These guys just want to ruin other people's days for laughs. After all, there are plenty of reasons people would want to do hi-sec mining despite the fact that it is a low-isk earning activity.

I have a similar disdain for the corps that target really small corporations and DOW them to extort money. I at least understand that they are doing it for money rather than just laughs, but it still makes the game a lot less fun for people who just want a corp for their friends to play around in and don't want to get involved in the giant alliance politics.

I'm with Lord Cooper on this one.  The easiest counter is simply paying attention to the game, followed by tanking your ship to the point of not being worth it.  Yeah, it lowers yield, but stuff like mining drones and mining implants aren't ever worth the money in high sec mining, while bulkheads and a Damage control considerably increases the cost of the gank.

Plus, it's the best ingame to tutorial for the importance setting standings and learning that the chat screen is the most important window in the game.

Heh, I remember when I made a trial account last winter. There was a miner ganking corp with a protection racket. They'd sell you a license to mine, or blast you. I did a lot of mining, and I liked them. They kept you on your toes, you couldn't park yourself in a belt and clock off for dinner. I had to keep moving, align to station and keep an eye on my surroundings, prepared to warp the moment something unpleasant crept up. They made mining fun and exciting. And it felt like a challenge to them, being a free miner.
If you want to mine in Hi-Sec, mine. Imagine every rock gone is a rock they will cry themselves to sleep over. Do not pay their fines. Slip out through their nets, and make it an expense for them to hunt you. If you do want to AFK-mine, or fly unscouted, that is not wrong. Take responsibility for those choices, and do it anyway. Make the space mafia a feature. Make yourself a guerilla-miner.

I like how they made you think like a little fish in a big lake. Keep an eye out, be smart, and make sure that you are worth less than the effort of clipping you. It was good preparation for the bigger ponds.

Of course, they might have been a different type. They didn't just do it for the sake of upsetting people, they had a scam going, and they were also a protest against carebears in general. High Security does not mean Safe, that sort of thing really irritated them. The Minerbumpers seems to at least be related to them, though.

There's a problem with this though, Mining is not even nearly profitable to justify this kind of effort.

I see. From a ganking point of view, or a mining point of view?

I might be gushing over it, truth be told. I was just so spellbound of the fact that online mining was fun and exciting.

You guys realize this whole thing isn't about ganking, it's about 'bumping'.  Bumping is literally piloting your ship into someone else's and the collision doesn't cause damage, but causes both ships to careen away.  The pilot can get it under control, but chances are the miner is afk and they come back 30 minutes later to find they haven't been doing any mining.  There's no actual weapons involved.

Plus the whole thing is a joke.  He says he'll 1v1 you if you become a bumper for an indefinite amount of time, after you've lost your best ship to concord suicide.  You guys are reading onion articles.

Oh, I see! Well, that is a different thing entirely. Back in my very brief day, they would shoot you to bits.

I might be misremembering, but I would have thought setting your ship to orbit would be a useful counter-measure to bumping? Not to mention, if someone prefers to park their mining ship unattended, I think it's a choice to take that risk.

Oh, I'm talking about actual suicide ganking that I've seen happen. The people who are literally trying to ruin other people's enjoyment in the game for no real benefit to themselves other than the lulz. The miner bumping thing is also a jerk move, but I haven't seen that actually happen to anyone so I don't know if that's much of a thing or not.

You're saying that like it's a bad thing. Why should someone be rewarded with ore for being AFK for 30 minutes?

Why shouldn't they? All players are rewarded with skill points even while AFK. Manufacturers and Traders are rewarded with goods/isk after being AFK for long periods of time. Why can't miners?
