its a common noob trap in eve to care only for income and savety. many players get stuck in this loop forever.
my advise is to embrace the hostille nature and not make the game a grind fest to save a few bucks.
i especially suggest to stay way away from any mining and industry as a starter, these things are realy only viable on dedicated alt chars.

As a primary activity, I completely agree.  My main-in-cryo was a Rock Puncher, and that got old faster than I thought it would.

As an easy-money activity, I think mining still has a place for alphas... it's predictable income and low risk exposure.  A cheaply fitted Venture is maybe 600k, and a nice one is just over 2m; a cheapo Venture can pay for its own future replacement in a single haul, a nicely fit Venture in a few hauls.  Gankers like CODE _could_ pop you fairly easily, but as long as people AFK mine in barges, those barge killmails have more social value to them for not that much more effort.

These days, I've been mining as an ease-my-old-bones activity.  While the potential clickfest in EVE isn't as bad as RTS games, my middle aged wrists still complain sooner than they used to.  >_>

For that you'll need scanning skills, combat probes to scan down the Mobile Tractor Units, and some frosty nerves.  The folks that tend to use MTUs also tend to have friends; just because you can salvage without flagging an aggression timer, don't think it'll be without consequence.

That said, you can often tag along with people, above board, to salvage and loot.  I did that a few times with a new friend, averaged about 8m/hr (salvage/loot/bounties/mission) with a salvaging destroyer and his MTU.

I'd suggest running (pirate! stay clear of any covert or unsecured) relic sites in null or wormhole space as a good earner for a newbie.  A single semi-decent relic site will make you about 30m, the most I've ever pulled from one being 150m.

Mining is for chumps or people with umpteen accounts, people fall into it because it's almost risk free and the isk/h is better than the easy alternatives on day one.  By day three (probably sooner) that is certainly no longer the case.  After say two months ingame (assuming subbed training speeds) you should be able to make a minimum of 60-100m isk/h if you focus on combat or exploration.  Mining in anything smaller than a rorqual (capital ship) will never approach that level of income per account.

But if you massively multibox, the isk/hour linearly goes up! Since the hours until you can plex an account is the same no matter how many accounts you have. But it needs a lot of startup cost and a good computer.

it also needs the will to work a game. usually dudes that do that calculate before they even start the game the first time how long it will take them to get X isk and how awsum it will be to play a whole horde of slaves for free, just to realize at some point that its utterly borring and futile, at witch point they usually quit. or they get their multibox fleet ganked and quit.
anyway, i think it takes a special kind of authism to enjoy it and i would strongy advise not to bother with it.

that said, a second account is extremely handy. having an alt covops on a secondary account a game changer, and that dude proably will eventually have plenty of free training time time to get some industry running, too.

Sure.  But then you have to ask yourself why you aren't using all those accounts in a far more efficient way.  Rattlesnakes in a C5 wormhole (for just one example) would bring in a hell of a lot more per account, with only slightly more risk.

But yeah, the vast majority of players don't have any need or desire to run a legion of alt accounts in this manner.  Many people, myself included, see making isk as a sort of necessary issue.  Losing it is far more fun :)

So I maaaay have just picked up one of the EVE starter packs.  :P

I haven't activated an account yet. I'm just debating about whether I want to start today with the current tutorials, or wait a day and try the "New Player Experience"

I suppose the rewards between the two starts would be minimal?

the new player thingies and tutorials are not so much about giving free stuffs to new dudes as helping them to take the first steps over the learning cliff.
i doubt they will lock you out of anyhting for starting more early.

I'm still on the fence with how involved I want to be, due to my wrist misbehaving...  but I'm staying open minded.

I have it installed currently and created a character, for some reason the 'New Player Experience' didn't fire though, so I think I'm stuck in the regular old tutorials.

At work, so I just set up a bunch of skills until I can actually get on and play proper though.

Well, it turns out that these Alpha Clones have even less skills available to them than the trial accounts, so I guess they REALLY want people to upgrade to a real account.  Also I prefer the previous autopilot voice, but eh.

Also yea I'm interested in having our own Corp.
