Right, think I'm about to download this. Looked at some guides and such and this is just the most epic mmo I have ever put my sweet viewing spheres upon. Also, I'm a lot more convinced to get into it after I heard about PLEX.
Still not too sure what I really want to do in the game but I think I'll be the Caldari as I'm not a fan of religion...

Welcome aboard. :)

Standard disclaimer: while it is theoretically possible to fund your playtime by buying PLEX with in-game currency, it's not realistic for most players and generally takes up so much time that it makes the game not fun anymore to do. Even if you can and do want to do it...plan to pay for at least your first three months to build up skills. Earning enough ISK to buy a PLEX during your trial time is probably not realistic.

If I took up a profession that I enjoy and yields a lot of money then I don't see my enjoyment going down but it remains to be seen what I'll do I suppose.

Based on my experience as a new player and also asking the vets, the most practical ways to make ISK (EVE's currency) in the first week or two is by mining and doing security missions. If you do the tutorial you will get multiple ships as rewards, including a Venture (mining frigate) and a destroyer specified to the sovereignty that you choose. A properly fitted destroyer will have no issue running any Level 2 Security Missions.

Caldarians will receive a Comorant-class destroyer (hybrid turret-based). I sold mine and bought a Corax (missile-based) instead because Caldari is better known for their missiles and I train my character to specialise in missiles. To my knowledge, missile ships are great for PvE (doing Security Missions) because the can snipe from distance at which the enemy NPCs cannot fire back, but not as good in PvP because missiles take a while to reach their target.

Here's a good starting guide.

Speaking of making ISK, I'm having a bit of a problem there myself. When I was last active I remember making 30 million/hour soloing level 4 missions, but now, after several days of tweaking and adjusting trying to get back into the flow of things, the best I've managed is only 8.5 million/hour and even that isn't sustainable over time and doesn't include ammo costs.

From looking over the eve forums apparently there was a massive loot nerf a few years back. Some of it is obvious, like how drones no longer drop refinable materials and agents no longer have quality levels. But basically missions just don't seem to be as profitable as they used to be. Ironically, mining in my battleship is almost as profitable as mission running.

And yet, looking at character progression I have hundreds of millions of ISK worth of skillbooks I'd like to buy over the next month or two. Capital ships skillbook alone costs 360 million...just for that one skillbook. I could be flying a T3 cruiser in 18 days of training, but they cost a little under 200 million stock, and I'm told it will be anywhere from half a billion to a billion to actually fit it.

So if anybody wants to go looking for wormholes, or raid some complexes or something, let me know. 8m/hr just isn't cutting it when I have probably two billion worth of stuff to buy over the next few months.

There are 2 .04 systems not far from Ordion that link some highsec systems. Last time I was there no one else was. Though you always have to remember that you still need some kind of protection (and if it just scouts), and the protectors don't earn money while they do it.
Someone mentioned having an Orca. Highsec Mining with Orca support can be quite lucrative.

If you run missions, fit as little tank as you can while still surviving. Those other slots can then take modules that make you finish the mission faster. Be it propulsion modules, damage modules or whatever.

I can just repeat myself: the angels in minmatar space are mostly harmless. Their ewar is target painters. So you'll take a bit more damage. But they don't jam you, they don't damp you and they don't tracking disrupt you (not relevant for missiles yet, but I think changes are already proposed), they just die, leaving behind good loot. Not as good as Sansha, i think, but better than Serpentis. I didn't even bothered looting Serpentis lvl 4 missions anymore.

As you can fly a battleship LordBucket, you could try incursions. There are way more shield fleets than armor fleets about.

I'll have an orca soonish.

Actually my alt can fly one now, suppose I could bring him in. Shall I fit one up?

Should be able to get the client downloaded sometime today if I can get to the library. Don't have the money available to resub sadly so I'll be doing a trading character with a trial and see how far I can get with that :D Goal 1: do tutorial missions to gain some capital. Goal 2: set up a base of operations. Goal 3: trade and mission during downtime to get more capital! :D  I did a lot of trading back when I was last subbed, did well enough at it that it took about a week to go from 60ish M Iskies up to 200M of loots and COH (90% in assets and trades) so Hopefully I'll have that sort of steamrolly luck this go around :P

Digging's a lot like surgery, see -- you grab the sharp thing and then drive the sharp end of the sharp thing in as hard as you can and then stuff goes flying and then stuff falls out and then there's a big hole and you're done. I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

I'd be happy to help out mining, however that may be. I only have a Venture as of right now, so I probably won't be able to mine very fast or in the capacity that an Orca is needed for, but I'm sure we could get a few others and set up some kind of mining op.

I've got an old character with a good deal of SP (mostly in mining & production).  Thinking about taking advantage of the resub offer they're doing right now.  Main issue I've always run across is that the corps I end up in always end up playing when I'm not available.  I'm generally available evenings Eastern Time, when have people in the corp been playing?

For getting money, I recommend Industry, tech 2 manufacturing to be precise. Will take you very long to get the skills and set up, but at least once you get it running you have nice income that you only need to personally attend to like, once per week or something to set up the jobs and research.

What skills do I need for this? I already have quite a few industry skills maxed.

With the rumored changes to research and mass availability of datacores from LP stores rumored to be coming in the next expansion, I'm not sure that now's a good time to freshly start working on that particular pipeline.

Also, is it realistic to make a steady stream of T2 blueprint copies if you don't have a PoS to ensure access to research slots?

So far as I can tell we have a 24 hour crowd right now. Over the past week I've logged on at various times from early afternoon until dawn and I've yet to see the channel empty. Though
