Oh, they've changed the buddy system since the last time I used it. It used to be a case of you needed a friends e-mail and you'd then input that to get an invite sent. Seems there are now open invitation links. That makes this much easier to deal with.

Though, on the down side, the inviter no longer gets a reward if the invitee uses a PLEX to upgrade their account. I used to simply give someone who'd used my buddy link one of my PLEX, they'd use it to upgrade the account, which would trigger my reward, which resulted in me getting a PLEX. It was a good way to give someone a 51 day trial without restrictions, basically. It's a shame they've clamped down on that... though I can appreciate why they did. Still, a shame :(

As for getting to the point you can support your account in 21 days... as others have mentioned, it IS possible. But the price is treating the game like a second job for those 21 days, and systematically sucking all the fun out of the experience. It's more than possible to fully support your gaming using in game money, I've been doing that for about 3 years now, but it takes a little to get to that point. I have always told new players that a good rule of thumb is to simply expect and accept that for the first 3 to 4 months you'll be paying for the game with RL funds. In that time, play it to have fun, gradually upgrade your ship, your skills, and meet people and simply enjoy the game. Treat it like a GAME. Because, that's what it is! At the end of that time you'll be in a position where, through a variety of means, you'll likely be able to earn the money you need each month to cover your subscription.

The only down side to that, is if your goal is to get to the point where you can cover your sub, as soon as you can, then you'll likely spend most of the time up to and for a while following the point you can do that, very poor >.< You wont be able to justify replacing ships easily, you wont be able to take advantage of cheap ship deals if they're not directly going to benefit you (that curse sure would be nice for PvP, but it doesn't help you run Level 4 missions so it's no good for now...)

As with RL, ultimately, it takes money to make money. So the first focus is to get enough money behind you to support whatever your endeavour is going to be (mining, missioning, ratting) and then just let your money amass while you do that and have fun. Once your funds are at a few hundred million, then start thinking about what to do with the money that could help you get more, and just let it build up from that :)

How easy it is to fully fund the monthly sub by doing in-game activities now? As in how many hours do you have to devote each week to do it? And at which point a new player can start doing it?

It's possible to make enough ISK in 21 days to pay for a subscription via PLEX (which doesn't reward the persona who invited you, FYI) but only if you treat the game like a second job and grind ISK almost constantly.

I'm over a year into the game and am just a few weeks away from the point where I make enough ISK to PLEX.

There's a lot of ways to make ISK. FW, Alchemy reactions, and capital site escalations in wormholes are some of the best income streams I know of.

Anyone hear how they plan to compete with Star Citizen, not to mention the myriad single-player/co-op/private server games?

EVE and Star Citizen competing is like choosing between apples and oranges. EVE doesn't need to compete with Star Citizen.

I'm afraid it will. Eve is the next best thing, with it's intrigue and scale and diversity, but the killer thing for star citizen is that you'll have a crew. Throw in first person and boarding (yes, the latter is in), and we have a clear winner.

I have been wanting to play EVE since the days of X2: The Threat. I played the heck out of that game because that was the closest experience to playing EVE, despite offline. Monthly subs just really discourage me from playing a game. And it seems that some people who do nullsec rarely log in and play, they actually assign skill training and play other games, while still paying subs to CCP. :/

I like Star Citizen because they follow Guild Wars' approach.

If I'm still interested after the 21 day trial that was offered to me via PM then I'll likely give whatever cash I have at the end of that to whomever and then resub with my old account. Got some old money on that one, only about 1-200M iskies in the bank last I remember but I remember going from 100M to 200M over the course of about a week so maybe that trend will pick up again heh.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to have more than one account... At least that was in the EULA last time I signed up. So, yeah, if you've had an account before, even a trial, it's probably still in the system.

Now, in practice, tons of people use multiple accounts for various reasons. Again, last time I played it wasn't policed very heavily unless you're blatantly botting things.

Nah, CCP actively encourage 'mule' accounts now, they even have PLEX deals where you can get a 90 day account pack for alternate accounts, specifically for use by people who want multiple accounts.

If there's enough interest in a B12 corp, either in resurrecting the old corp or in a bunch of people starting fresh, I would be happy to help out where I can. I know a few people seem to be getting bitten by the bug all at once, and it may be fun for you guys to all experience the start of the game as a group. I honestly think that working things out with friends who're equally new to things is some of the best fun you can have in an MMO.

Obviously, having friends who're already established help out can speed things along significantly, but too much help can sometimes rob people of the initial "Wooo, check out what I just unlocked/figured out/can now do!"-ness of exploring a new game. I think packing up and moving off into wormhole space may, in effect, do the same thing. You'd skip out on a lot of the learning and the shenanigans that go with it, which are part of the fun.

For the record though, living in a wormhole can be very profitable indeed, and is how I built up the initial trading capital that set me on the path to earning my PLEX money in game. I lived in a C4 wormhole for about 5 months, and in that time made several billion ISK. But I went in there with a battleship with T2 fittings, and by the time I left I was regularly flying a Strategic Cruiser with faction fittings. I'm not sure how profitable it would be to live in one prior to having the skills to take part in small group missions into neighbouring WH's to farm the NPCs.

But to reiterate my offer, should any dorfs graduate to space dorfs, I'd be happy to fly with you guys and help out in any way I can, assuming it's not the other side of the galaxy lol. I'm currently situated in Amarr Empire controlled part of the Eve universe, in the Kor-Azor region of space (High-sec). So should any of you make Amarr characters, or simply move out this way during the course of your travels then perhaps we can fleet up for some !!FUN!! ;)

(Speaking of which, I believe there is a Bay 12 public chat channel... I will have to check on that.)

Yeah account names are unique, and they don't make a point of deleting accounts, even trial accounts.

As the buddy system seems to have changed a bit (for the easier) I'll drop this buddy invite here as well. I'm not sure if these time out eventually and a new link needs to be generated, but for those interested here it is. Buddy Invite

As I think has been mentioned, these will upgrade a trial account to an extended trial, which instead of running for 14 days, will run for an extra week for a total of 21 days. If the account is upgraded at any time to a full account, then any remaining time on the trial account is also added to the 30 days you purchase with your first sub. So don't feel you need to eke out every last minute of the trial before upgrading, to get the most out of it.

Unfortunately, it seems they have addressed a loop hole which existed in the old e-mail buddy system. Where you could invite a friend to join, and if you had the in-game funds, purchase a PLEX off the market, give that to your friend, who would then upgrade their account using the PLEX. This would allow the inviter to select a PLEX as a referral reward, meaning that the inviter lost nothing (the PLEX they gave away, would be given back by the referral reward system) and the buddy would get 51 days to work out if they liked the game before having to sub themselves.

Finally, I'm not sure if this open buddy invitation will automatically add anyone who signs up using it to my contacts list (and me to theirs), I can't recall if the old e-mail buddy invites did that, but I think they might have. In any case, as a few people from here already seem to be making characters, if anyone else does decide to pick this up, either just to dabble in or to take a shot at 12 corp, please feel free to add me to your contacts and send me an Eve mail. My main character's name is Mostyn Iorik. :)


Oh, and the old B12 chat channel is still there. It's a public channel called Bay12 Eve.

I have been through the 14 day period and subbed for a month.  Just about to sub for another.

I heard about this thing called The Angel Project on a podcast.  Basically someone gathers together donations, and gives them out to those that ask.  I asked for a Rifter towards a fund for PVP, and got 10, plus 100million isk.  Which was nice.  I was still on a trial, which was a surprise.  Anyway, it is funding my exploration into the game, and means I am throwing myself into Faction War and PvP without worrying about ISK.  Since then I have found a way to fund my cheap frigate losses, so I am cash stable now, at least with frigates.  I am enjoying PvP, even though at the moment it is mostly me dieing, I am getting a handle on fitting, dscan, target selection, safe points etc.

With getting into Cruisers etc, its easy to get into them, but each larger ship is proportionally harder to fit and fly properly.  I am still learning to fly Rifters (guns and armour), and dable in Slashers (guns and sheilds), and plan to move to the Breacher (missiles and sheilds) later.  Plenty to open up and explore without worrying about dashing to larger ships.  But its an open game, you can find your fun wherever.

As for paying for the game with in game stuff, from what I have read on the forums its pretty impossible to do immediatly, unless you work full time at it (one PLEX = 500-600 million isk).  I figure Eve for a month is cheaper than one night in the pub.

Well, the feeder corp is essentially a training corp - free stuff, mentoring, et cetera. We'll take people who are on Day 1 of their trial.

If you guys want to revive -HFS- and go to that corp instead, I'm fine with that too. I'll make sure -HFS- is set at least +5 in standings. Maybe even added into the alliance, who knows.

The reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of starting fresh with a new character. Dunno, might be silly to toss out everything I've already trained though. I'm definitely getting rid of 2 of my 3 characters though. Gotta figure out which to keep, if any.
