I was exaggerating a wee little bit, to get the second tier of mining ship I did have to wait 2 months in total and a month for the base skill :/

Getting into cruiser can be done in few days easy, mastering it takes months.
I am not sure how the new frigates work now but i assume mining is much more fun now with larger ore bays.
When i played last time i had fun with industrial hauling stuff around and mining when just wanted to chill, did some fighting in frigate to slowly cap the base skills of it.
Skill system can be at times really frustratingly boring if nothing fun aint happening while wait.

I would be glad to join Bay12 only corp but i doubt there is not enough people to get that rolling. >enter sad face here <

I am kind of irritated that I can't run this.
I tried the demo a couple of times and each time it got hung up on the character creation section. No idea why.

I would assume so, but I haven't checked.

Tweak your graphics settings down to the lowest possible at the login screen (hit esc).

Also, here's a free 21-day trial on me.

How easy it is to fully fund the monthly sub by doing in-game activities now? As in how many hours do you have to devote each week to do it? And at which point a new player can start doing it?

Anyone hear how they plan to compete with Star Citizen, not to mention the myriad single-player/co-op/private server games?

Prepare to buy few months of subscription. It really depends what you doing to get ISK.
I was mainly mining for income to cover ship loses. If mined 2 weeks i could get proper sum for PLEX.
Ratting in 00 is best way to get easy ISK once get to able ship (better than cruisers).
There is allso trading/reselling.
The PLEX price has been driven ridicilously high since the FW came in so it takes some effort to get the dough in new toon.
Just enjoy the game for few months and after that when skilled enough get into making serious ISK.

It's possible to make enough ISK in 21 days to pay for a subscription via PLEX (which doesn't reward the persona who invited you, FYI) but only if you treat the game like a second job and grind ISK almost constantly.

I'm over a year into the game and am just a few weeks away from the point where I make enough ISK to PLEX.

There's a lot of ways to make ISK. FW, Alchemy reactions, and capital site escalations in wormholes are some of the best income streams I know of.

EVE and Star Citizen competing is like choosing between apples and oranges. EVE doesn't need to compete with Star Citizen.

Every time there's big news in this game it wants to draw me (and I'm sure many others) back in. I never could treat it like a job and except for missions/ratting and small scale mining, I'd never been able to wrap my head around the numbers of the game.

Still, once again its siren call pulls me... EVE... why do you torment me so?

Maybe... maybe not... we'll see over the next few days. I certainly don't have the time for it right this moment.

I was about to post exactly this.

So is there a bay12 group?

You can make a lot if ISK in Incursions. I started running them roughly 6 weeks into the game. You'll need a Battlecruiser of your race, the one that can fit the big guns, or a battleship. You need to be able to fit t2 tank modules und some support modules (t2 should be priority, if you don't have the very expensive faction modules). Turret ships are very much preferred over missile ships.

What is incursions?

It is PvE content for fleets. There are quite a few public ingame chatchannels where you can post your ship and hope to get into a fleet.

Fleets between 10 and 40 pilots are needed (80 for the site that will make a particular incursion despawn). Fleets consist of DPS ships and logistics. Logistics are EvE's healers.
The story is, that Sansha Nation ships appear massed in one constellation to try and abduct ppl from the planets there. Capsuleers fight against them in deep space while the armys and navys of the attacked nation defend the planets themselves.
