I need a whole new computer, but it's a bit annoying that it happens when that's a long, long way away.

Oh boy Incarna. Want a nice virtual shirt? Be prepared to pay more than you would for a real shirt. Want a monocle? $70 http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/06/22/eek-eves-clothing-and-cash-crisis/

Perhaps this is a first step towards dropping the Subscription model entirely?

Ha, that's bloody epic!

It might be a step towards ditching the subscription model, though I wouldn't bet on it. For those of you who won't read the linked article: PLEXes can be converted into a new currency, used to buy vanity items. In theory, EVE might no longer require PLEX for subscription fees. In practice, though, it depends on whether or not vanity item demand remains high. (Not to mention that EVE's balance would be thrown for a loop if accounts were free, and thus people could maintain any number of untraceable alts, each training skills concurrently, without having some monetary restriction involved.)

I've recently re-subscribed to EVE myself.

Is there a Bay12 corp out there somewhere?

I'm not sure if there's a bay 12 corp, but there is apparently a B12 chat room on there ("Bay12 Eve") where we could all talk and maybe organise a corp/fleet.

EVE is something I've always wanted to get in to, but have always failed after a month or so of playing. Do you guys have any suggestions for a good way to get started? Would it be better to start off as a trader/miner or a combat type?

Hmm. Probably better to start off as a miner/trader. Run through the tutorial and see which type of missions tickle your fancy.

After that, set yourself a goal and work towards it.

Really, the game isn't for everyone. It has many long and dull parts and unless you have something you are working directly for it is hard to see the fun in it.

No. There's a rumour going around they might switch to free-to-play some day in the distant future, but it's still strictly a rumour. And said rumour is mostly based around the fact that, with their new item shop, they'd still have a revenue stream without subscriptions. Honestly, I'd be really surprised if they did away with subs, but hey, that's just my gut feeling against other people's gut feelings. When your beliefs could just as easily be replicated by a distasteful lunch, you learn not to rely on them.  ;)

Many games, some bigger than EVE, are going away from F2P as well so it adds some weight to the rumor.

No, EVE is not F2P.  Or, at least, it isn't any more F2P than it ever was.  You can still buy PLEX with ISK...  So, if you've got a steady revenue stream in-game, you don't have to pay for your gametime with real money.

The problem I have with EVE is similar to the problem I have with DF.  Its sandbox-y nature means that things get boring after a while, unless you've set a good goal for yourself.

Everyone keeps saying that finding a good corporation is the key to happiness in EVE, but I haven't managed to find one yet.  Seems like every corporation I join has a hell of a time getting anything done...  And then falls apart after a few months.  Very frustrating.  Right now I'm just running around empire space in an NPC corp.

They say the new player experience is all kinds of wonderful now...  Haven't tried it myself.  I rolled up my character back in 2008 or so, and haven't revisited the new player experience since that time.  So I can't say with any certainty there.

The nice thing about EVE is that you are never locked into one career path.  You can start out heavily in mining (like I did) and then decide you'd rather be shooting stuff.  The skill points you put in to mining are kind of wasted...  But you just start training up weapons instead, and go shoot things.  So, do whatever looks interesting to you.  If you don't like it later, no harm.

I can't say I'd really recommend mining as a career choice...  It's a halfway-decent way to get started.  It'll get you some ISK, so you can get some better gear.  But it really is pretty boring, and the income isn't that amazing.  You can make better money, faster, doing just about anything else.  Well, unless you really like mining and train all the way up into gas or ice mining...  I hear those are pretty profitable.  But I didn't stick with it that long.

I personally enjoy missioning...  And salvaging is a great way to make cash...  Exploration is fun, too, but I suck at scanning stuff down...  Then there's all the manufacturing and trading stuff - never really got into that myself.

Yeah, killing npc pirates, missioning, and salvaging was how I got my isk when I played before. And I can share your frustration with corps kinda... Seems like the ones I've been in were like that too.

Mining is a big bucket of suck unless you're doing OP's with a corp that has good Orca Pilots, Mining isn't boring if theres a bunch of people around and a big piece of machine to load your rock into instead of getting can tipped or flying back and forth.

I'm working on creating a corp (read: waiting for my Gallente Industrial skill to train up to level 4 so I can fly the Iteron IV I bought for way cheap so I could mine like crazy).

I was thinking of it just being a mercenary corp (called Ash Rose Security) but if that's no good, I can think up something to do with Bay12.

Note that I'm a relatively new player by anyone's standards - I played through the two-week trial and just recently (within the last 24 hours) upgraded to a paid account.

The most fun I ever had in Eve was running a Minmater tackle/pack pilot in a Rifter taking down larger ships by stopping them from running away and laughing as they absolutely failed to hit me as I orbited them at dizzying speeds.
