So how accurate is the stereotype that this game feels more like a business venture than a game?
Varies, you a grunt in the CfC or the HbC? Not very, its the game you get on to blast the shit out of people and bullshit. In a wormhole, yes absolutely. Striking it out on your own, yes absolutely.

In a wormhole, yes absolutely.

Based on our...how long in a wormhole? 3-4 months as Hidden Fun Stuff?

Wormhole space is intimidating but STUPID profitable. If you join up with a good corp, you can get all the pew you want.

Well, I have most career agent missions done now. I'm generally lost on what to do. I mean, I know I could do the first epic arc but doing ship combat against NPC's for around a week doesn't sound particularly fun. What did you guys do once you got done with the tutorial missions in Eve?

Years worth of agent missions...

I would say pick something fun and see if you can find any corp who does it regularly. The game is much better with other people around.

Personally I would take the B12er up on the worm whole stuff. It teaches you some good game skills and really gets you in the paranoid "watch your back" mindset. Do that for a while and see how it plays out. Plus you are with a b12er.

And then the 3 months I spent spying with an alt in WormBro, and a further 4 I spent in TDSIN in a C6 before I had to stop playing because of driver issues. Yes. It requires effort, unless you have mooks scanning everything down for you. More than that the time it takes to make good money(I made 3 billion in one day at one point in TDSIN.) in skill training, time put in, etc, is rather troublesome. In a C1-4 the money is piss poor, and you are better off missioning. But in a C6 or C5, you get about 1 bill per site split 6 ways.

Bummed around in high sec mining with HFS then helped us get set up in a C2 wormhole. Then proceeded to run the corp with Mater Shogrun, after leadership went inactive, then Mater bummed out, we went separate ways and I shut down the PoS about 2 months later when the RL friends I brought in stopped playing. Then I joined CVA for about 4 months, discovered the cardinal flaw of alliances(They suck.) Thought it was just a flaw with CVA, joined Nulli Secunda, they realized that I actually have a few friends in RL who go to popular forums and play EVE Online, and I got kicked because "Spai." So a bummed it back to Provi joined a group of fantastic Australian gentlemen who taught me a lot about how to PvP, and so ended my first year of EVE Online.

Honestly if you want to get out into Null Sec, check out Unacceptable Behaviour. ticker is sometimes easier, .U.B. Public is their public channel, they're in Tribal Band now, and are trying to bolster numbers. I'm no longer with them but I maintain good ties.

I am ten days into this too, unfortunately without any special pack.

I found this blog, which is sadly no longer being updated, an inspiration for my journey into Eve and a possible route into some PvP:

I enjoy Eve. I'm always impressed by the amount of depth the game allows, and the general lack of rules. I love the stories about mounting tensions due to trading undercuts or something incredibly simple resulting in huge wars between dozens of corporations, scamming events in the millions by a few intelligent players working pyramid schemes or even simple espionage bringing corporations to their knees.

I've tried it three or four times in the past and liked it, but it's one of those games where you need a group of people on mumble or teamspeak to chat with while you do your mind numbing week-long mining expeditions, as well as some constant incentive to get online every day.

Argh, I need to start playing again! Just need to get the installer redownloaded and then I'll probably do the 14-day trial or ask someone here for a 21 days so I can get back into it :P Started playin back in 06, lasted a few months then life happened. Hiatus until two years ago, played a few months and once again life happened >:( Inter-region trading and doing runs out to nullsec was pretty lucrative, so maybe I'll get back into doing that if I start paying again.

Digging's a lot like surgery, see -- you grab the sharp thing and then drive the sharp end of the sharp thing in as hard as you can and then stuff goes flying and then stuff falls out and then there's a big hole and you're done. I kinda wish there was more screaming, but rocks don't hurt so I guess it can't be helped.

This.

I would not mind starting again my self but the skill levelling is well a bit bullshit like 2 months just to be able to fly a cruiser >,>, lots of people are ass hats and it's hard to find a decent group to join up with.

Do we even still have a bay12 group up ?

I have the impression that the leveling mechanics are discouraging people from actually logging in and play.

Actually from what I recall you can start very close to cruiser use with some character setups. I remember one which let you start with frigate 5 already trained, and do your first million or so skillpoints still run at double the normal time?
