Hm, should've specified that I'm an Alpha account and am not self-sufficient, yet. Mostly because of school and all that fun stuff.

What do you guys think I'm missing skill wise to make a well rounded char, core, must-have skill wise? I'm into exploration, small-scale / solo pvp and solo mission running. Thinking this char will be ready for some action soon.

Played again for the first time since January. Had a nice frig fleet that killed two t3s, and earlier in a gatecamp fleet we killed a carrier. Lost two Stabbers.
Even tough I can't fly all my fits as an alpha, it is still nice to not be limited to what was available before.
Some I could fly, but don't really want to risk with subpar skills, like my Astero.

The request for a wormhole corporation still stands, by the way. I despise searching for corps that are recruiting, and would much prefer a recommendation from somebody here.

I can only offer that you could join my corp for the time being so you don't have to pay tax. Just my me, my alts and one random guy who doesn't seem to log in anymore. I should kick him.

Ah, not us then.  As much as I love it, I'd actually recommend against wormholes as an alpha.  The lack of cloaking would really hurt your ability to do the most basic stuff required of you in w-space, and it's kinda the land of expensive, high end doctrines that have been optimised to a tee.  If your heart is set on it and you're unable to sub, then I believe Wormbro takes alphas.  They're a bit loosely organised and spergy for my tastes, but the CEO is a good guy.  And, well, you don't exactly have a huge amount of options here.

Your tank skills are awful for your SP level (or indeed, for someone with half of it), prioritise getting all of them to at least 3 or 4 (train all to 1, then to 2 etc to maximise initial gains).

Looking at your skills in general, it seems like you've been training things all the way to 5 before moving on.  Stop that, especially with support skills.  You get minimising returns on investment for each level of a skill, so should be working on getting a decent spread (3 or 4) over all the relevant skills in a category before doing the long train to  level 5.  Not doing this means you're likely less effective than someone with fewer SP who has spread things out properly.

It's actually a bit heartwarming to see so much SP in navigation.  They're almost universally applicable skills that many new players seem to ignore.

You have frig 5 and do exploration, get yourself into a covops.  Do this ASAP if you prefer explo to combat, after tank skills if the reverse is true.

Very glad to see Thermodynamics trained, I'd count it as the best skill in the game.

I mean, I have no problem working in wormholes without a cloak. You just have to learn how to be careful, and always have your eyes open (Or be burning off into space with an MWD on stable cap from a safe, because unless your enemy brought an interceptor or Slasher you'll be fine, at least in a T1 scanning vessel).

I worked in wormholes for several months before my alliance moved to Null and disintegrated. While yeah, I'm not capable of 1v1 combat or organized duels, I was still able to bring that much more DPS, or scan a few more wormholes down for the alliance to explore (Even if the C3+ sites are too hard to run while on Alpha and being cautious).

Thanks for the feedback, I've been keeping the subscription alive as a sort of donation to the game during my long hiatus so didn't pay too much attention to the training queue.

Yeah, should probably get them armour skills going too and shield compensation ones. I did train the basic skills to 4 then didn't actually know which direction I wanted to take the char in (hence lack of specialisation apart from exploration) so ended up adding a bunch of lvl 5 training for support / fitting skills thinking they would be useful, if sub-optimal because of diminishing returns. Anyways, first levels training goes fast so this should be good enough for getting into usable shape in relatively short order. Not looking for anything fancy at first, some frigate / destroyer / cruiser action to get started.

Join "Spectre Fleet", the ingame channel, for fleet pvp and gatecamps. There's usually different fleets each day and they take inexperienced pilots and most fleets will have some fits for alphas as well.

Spectre Fleet can be fun for casual roams/camps, but in my experience with them (and mind you, it's been awhile since I've flown with them) be wary of any midweek fleets where the FC has pre-arranged a fight with any particular pirate alliance. Such fleets spend like an hour forming up and the opposing side will -always- bring hard counters, more logi, and better quality ships (i.e. if the fleet is tech 1 cruisers, the opponents will bring HACs/T3s)... so a long wait to form up and then a minute or two of f1 fighting followed immediately by getting roflstomped and/or hiding in a station.

5 million SP cap reached. i can technically ride a battleship but i dont have large weapons so its like ehhhh. or perhap i could use a battleship with M sized weapons but y tho?

im gonna keep farming with the stabber or perhaps upgrade to do L3s in a BC, the only worry is that i only have the skill up to lvl3 so im not sure if that would be enough for an artillery hurricane compared to my L2 Stabber.

while i figure it out, im doing some gatecamping in Lonetrek. spent like 6-7 million fitting a combat probe. it can field 3 drones, 2 rockets and 1 autocannon. damage sounds good in paper if you used T2 but since im that poor i only have meta4. typical brawling fit with an ancillary shield booster to mitigate hull damage.

dont expect to survive a few trades against a proper pvp ship but its better than do missions, besides, it seems low sec is dead nowadays. i only see people rushing to jump.

EDIT:

welp, Lonetrek is dead, but i got to reach the warzone at Black Rise/Placid. almost kill a farmer in a venture but he scaped with half armor. getting close to cloud ring i finally got a good fight against a Hookbill.

fight was more or less even, the hookbill entered into scram+web range and churned out rockets against me. i did the same and the fight lasted for a while but in the end, the shield booster ran out of charges leaving the hull at mercy from the enemy. i enjoyed it honestly, got to shred 1/4 or so of the hookbill's shield before popping.

the probe seems like a capable ship due to the good amount of powergrid and electronics. perhaps i could use armor tank on it, have to check the simulator.

EDIT2:

here's the kill btw

https://zkillboard.com/kill/67568355/

EDIT3:

after messing around with fits, it seems brawling doesnt work in PvP unless you have a thick tanked ship so i went for something kitey with the probe

Probe [Buffer Shield]

prototype arbalest lml x2

5mn compact mwd
small FS9 regolith shield extender x2
small shield extender II

damage control II
power diagnostic system II x2 (powergrid is a bitch plus some shield buffs)

small anti-em screen reinforcer I x2
small anti-thermal screen reinforcer I

warrior I x7 (as much as i can store, and exploration frigates can field at least 3, 4 for the imicus)

mjollnir light missile x240 (3 magazines in total)

got at least 2 fights so far. a Firetail that tried to defang me by focusing the drones while tanking the missiles (navy superiority). both had to warp off because of several frigates entering the pocket.

second fight was against a corp member (Serylda is a neutral alt but they probably notice from the API), he was testing a kestrel fit, the fight was even. i was getting hurt in big chunks but the missiles and drones were applying as expected. the kestrel warped off at half armor, very enjoyale T1vT1 fight (ship wise at least).

so yeah, so far its op success. i even got to practice with manual controls a bit, just to keep range from scrams or webs. sadly, i havent been able to kill anyone because of the lack of warp disruption tools.
i tried putting 2 warp disruptors and it can be compensated with a medium shield extender but the capacitor wont be able to keep the points and the mwd at the same time.

any ideas there? its not like i like kitey bullshit but its the only strat right now that ensures i dont disappear in a few seconds.

I wouldn't really use a Probe for anything PVP-wise other than ambushing other exploration frigates at scanning sites (except the astero).  The bonuses to other frigates make them much more capable, and the only place I've found the element of surprise work for the exploration frigate is when the other guy thinks you're exploring.

Probe doesn't have the tank or the DPS to stand up in a fight with an enemy who's even a little prepared to fight back, even if you take them by surprise.

well it didnt have damage bonuses yeah but i was getting some good numbers out of the missiles and the flight of drones. so far the ship had me floating until i tried to fight a Daredevil that closed the gap even when i burned for speed (got him down to armor tho).

i thought that perhaps Minmatar isnt designed for close range so no matter what ship i would fly with web + scram, it would be just too weak to survive against the other ships. specially taking in account the T2 and faction advantages. kiting seemed like a better option and the Probe had a lot of CPU for getting a massive buffer so i went with it.

its the first time i use missiles for pvp and im getting a liking to them (still preferring projectiles for PvE tho). its just that i cant seem to find a ship that suits me outside of that one. guess im gonna keep checking on the simulator to see if i can come up with something then try again.

EDIT:

ok so tried to make a brawling fit by replacing the light missiles with rockets, adding a 200mm autocannon for extra, and using a meta4 medium shield extender to make space for web + scram. first fight i find in the amarr-minmatar warzone is an executioner. sadly, the ship doesnt survive. the enemy was using T2 beams. since its a tackler i wouldnt have survived kiting either.

scourge rockets along with the warriors were able to take him down to armor and almost to hull but i couldnt rep myself to keep going. gotta keep checking. i dont understand why the use of T2 beams while fighting at close range.

EDIT2:

well. i give up, fitted two breachers and it seems there's no way to win a fight in brawl range. i dont know how they do it. i could fit a rifter with some armor plates and it would probably end the same way. nothing seems to work except for kiting which is equally cancerous due to how much setup you have to put to be able to keep range. engaging an incursus with a dual tank fit? got up to armor then i got rekt. tried an AB fit with an oversized shield booster, the fit allows it but it wont make you survive against T2 beams from a succubus that cannot be remotely catched even if you burned.

im gonna rest for a while then si i can do something with the probe. its still the top ship so far, damage bonuses dont matter when the ship dies so quickly. at least with the Probe i could make sure that both drones and missiles were hitting the target, even if it ran away.
