A friend roped me into playing again.

Seems they haven't changed mining for a few years now :P

Citadels are *replacing* POS/starbases? As in POS are going away for good?
Yes. They will eventually be 100% gone.
Coming up on a summer where I'm only working half time and don't have coursework to deal with. I was considering finally getting into EVE properly when I saw the news about Goon burning after their protection racket failed. Are there any useful beginner's guides around? Is it possible to play effectively solo?
Well... to put it simply, the best ship in EvE is friendship. As in, the best way to learn how to play the game and to have fun is to play with other people. EvE is the last social MMO, that really requires you to know people and to work together, where as other MMO's are single player experiences with a chat box. It is possible to play solo, but you will definitely be limited in what you can do.
It's mainly just that once grad school starts back up again I'm going to be strapped for time, and my typical experience with group play in the past when free time is tight has typically boiled down to "kicked for inactivity" because I couldn't be online four nights a week, six hours a night, or whatever.

That, and I don't want to get sucked into a corp where new members are treated like farmbot slaves, since I've had more than my fill of that tripe elsewhere.

e: And by "solo" I don't mean the sense of "pretends to be playing a single player game", just that I tend to avoid getting entangled in ingame organizations when I can. Free agent as opposed to corporate cog.
Sounds like you've been joining shitty ass corps. No respectable corp would kick you for inactivity(unless you were in a important position) and same for the farmbot slaves. In my corp I log on when I want to log on, and I've missed maybe half of the ops because of time constraints and nobody gives a fuck. Still, the closest you could get to what you're describing is maybe faction warfare, I'm not experienced enough to know. If you want me to outline some respectable corps for you, then I'll go ahead. Because honestly, any corp that treats you that way is trash tier.

You seem like you know what's up when it comes to this game. Hope you don't mind if I look you up when I eventually decide to pay to play this game.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

http://secure.eveonline.com/trial/?invc=dd54dc0e-334d-4365-999f-a4a3ae576418&action=buddy Use this link if you do. You get extra game time and if you sub I get a plex, which I'll then sell and split with you so you can get like 500 million ISK.

Also, yeah. I've been playing for 2 years now. I tried to revive a Bay12 corp but it failed because nobody was interested. Maybe I can do that now if we have enough interest. Lordcooper also knows a lot, he's played for longer than I have and we flew together for a bit. He's a elite PvP fleet dude also, where as I sort of muddle around in PvP.

To clarify: I've only played EVE twice before on trial accounts, years back. That's my experience with groups on other MMOs talking. The best experience I've had with clan-equivalents was a GW2 clan where it was basically "chill in chat, run stuff if you feel like it", where participation was entirely optional and the folks were all generally relaxed when it wasn't crunch time. Mostly it's worse than that, with shit like expectations re: weekly time put in, participation in events, &c.

Speaking of, I'll take you up on that offer and use your referral link if I sign up.

I think I'll try it in a few weeks, and if it seems fun then I'm ready to shell out for a few months of time.

Yeah, that kind of shit does not fly in basically any good group, so you don't have to worry about people being assholes or exploiting you if you hop on.

Now that I'm thinking about it, anyone interested in a Bay12 corp? I'll do management and we will avoid being massive carebears(we'll live in sov null so get ready for explosions! but also dank isk making opportunities.) which is from what I gather what killed the bay 12 corp last time, everyone was massive carebears and got bored. Because the most fun thing in EvE is PVP, and if you avoid it, you are left with little else. We've already got space taken in my alliance, and the leader is chill with us joining. Basically, X up for dank frags.

I probably wouldn't be able to actually play until way down the road, but when I can I would totally be down for joining the B12 corp.

I would be as well, but I'm going to hold off on signing up for an account until the last of my work for the semester is in, so ~2 May.

Not to be too repetitive, but this is same for me.

When I was playing there were some places where you could join public PvP fleets. They'd usually fly in cheap ships and you don't need to be an elite pvper, you just need the correct ship for the fleet. Those "not purple, shoot it" fleets, which means you don't care for any standings, which is something to remember. Though the fleets were mostly fine with someone not wanting to shoot their allies, as long as they don't betray the fleet. Spectre Fleet was the name of the channel, iirc.
A group of 20 rifters with t1 guns is surprisingly effective. And great fun.

Aye, Spectre Fleet can be fun. Too bad most of their fleets are just interceptors these days.

It's been a while since I played. Back then Cormorants where the thing, with lots of other fleets depending on the FC.

They still use the longbow doctrine sometimes, I think. To be fair I haven't been paying much attention to Spectre lately, most of my recent pvp has been of the solo roaming cloaky ninja variety.
