Traning Already Adopted Dogs into War Dogs
« on: March 17, 2011, 06:43:12 am »

So I have quite a lot of Dogs in my fortress and I'd like to make them into war dogs. Problem is, most of the dogs are already adopted and named by several dwarves and apparently these can't be trained (The kennel gives me a "Needs trainable creature" error everytime I try "train war animal", even if I enable Animal Training on the Owner of a Dog).

So my question is: Is there a way to get my dwarves to train their pets to war dogs, or if this is not possible, is there a way to prevent puppies from being adopted by dwarves? I am in desperate need of war dogs to tear apart pedophiles visiting my fortress :(

Leather-tooth Wardogs cannot pierce leather-armored goblins.

Even if they can, just use, I don't know, COPPER weapons made of kobolnite?

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

Um, puppies aren't adopted by default, you have to set them up for adoption yourself, so, I have no idea what you're doing wrong.  But no, an owned animal cannot be trained unless the owner dies.

I shall equip my war dogs with copper weapons then.

So how do I set up pets for adoption? Is there some sort of checkbox? because usually my puppies seem to get adopted before they mature.

Hit Z and enter, it'll take you to the animal screen where you can view all your FPS eaters potential war mutts.

Puppies will never be adopted unless you manually mark them as available for adoption.  You are probably seeing puppies that arrived on the map already the pet of an immigrant.  There's not much you can do about that.
