More Points
« on: March 16, 2011, 08:15:46 pm »

Is there anyway to modify the amount of points you start out with? I am trying to complete a major design, but my dwarfs seem to die off before we get anywhere near completing. I don`t really want to do the removal of drinking and eating and what not, because after the project is done I intend on playing the fortress until it crumbles.

You have to edit the world_gen file in the init folder.  It's in the top few lines for each world profile, EMBARK_POINTS.

I've only very rarely had a problem getting a fort stable enough to work on projects. What kind of strategy are you following for your embark profile?

It was 3 miners, 2 woodcutters, 1 stone mason and I can`t remember the last dude. It was strictly a building team.

That's only 6, you get 7.

Just checked. The last one was a grower/herb.

Strangely enough, he was the last to die. Must had been hoarding beer.

I think you're focusing too much on building on embark. Unless you're embarking in an area where you need to get underground ASAP, you really only need two miners, and they don't need to be very skilled. I usually embark with 2  miners, carpenter/woodcutter, mason/mechanic, crafter/broker, farm/brew and farm/cook, all with only a few points in their skills. If I'm going to be on soil, the miners don't get any points.  Skills really don't need to be high unless you're going to face some kind of major challenge in the first year, and that saves a lot of points.

I would focus on building a smallish, stable fortress and then just funneling all the migrant waves into building the project. Projects seem to go better if you've got a stable fort that can support the huge drain on resources.

Where are you embarking? If you have moderate or better plant life above ground, you can forage with an unskilled herbalist. One berry is enough to get you started. From there, have a large food pile and some barrels handy and top up the booze supply once in a while. Keep your food stockpiles barrel-free. It really helps with booze production

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

A proficient herbalist/brewer can keep 20+ dwarves alive without any farm at all.

or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.

Or you could just use my simple fortress "mod" (in the sig)

While it is built for the beginners I am certain it would be great for megaprojecting.

Add in the more dwarves mod from here and you could have a massive assembly force at the start.

You can also set it in the world generation options right from the game. You don't have to dig txt files :).

I was so close to being done the second time. Used the tips mentioned + More Embark Dwarves. Had a massive cave in. It was bad. Funny, but bad.

Anyway though. Done with megaprojecting for now.

Could anyone tell me if Steel tools are the best? Is there anything better?

Unless they are going to be digging or cutting trees near any time of dangerous animals or in range of any possible ambushers, I hear that copper works best.
