Starcraft - Both one and two, let's kick this into overdrive
« on: March 16, 2011, 12:29:22 pm »

I've been looking around the other games forums lately and was disappointed i didn't find a SC thread to Necro, so, yeah, here it is, the only thread so far discussing Starcraft, so, yeah, talk on

Crash course for those who don't know : Starcraft is a RTS which focuses around three races : The Terran, The Zerg, and the Protoss, The Terran is a Race of Humans exiled from Earth, the Zerg is a Race of Insectoid aliens obsessed with assimilating other races into their own(ZERGRUSHKEKEKE, their fad), The Protoss takes the place of the Smart-ass race, as the most advanced race amongst the three races while having the best of psionic abilities(Their fad is "You must construct additional pylons)

Gameplay wise, the Terrans dominate in Ranged combat and their buildings are capable of fighting back(Best evidence is their lift off ability, second best is Fortresses), The Zerg basically swarms the whole damn place with large numbers, their fighting ability is low individually, but in numbers, you'd better run, The Protoss has the best units, each unit is capable of taking large amounts of damage and they deal Terrible, Terrible damage, but their numbers are in ones and the death of one unit is literally a small economic crisis

In short, each race is good at one and bad at one, each race is equal, there is no better race, well, except for your preference

Always preferred the Protoss, myself. Seemed slightly unfair to the other players when I would start teleporting around the map with my super-strong invisible killbots of doom, though.

I'm a big BW junkie, and follow professional SC for several years now. I wonder how many people here on B12 know/watch korean proSC and if there are who do you cheer for.
I have big love-hate relationship with AirforceACE and really like older Terrans like Nada, Iris, iloveoov, FBH or Boxer. Also Flash is the best player ever peroid :P

As for SC2 i didn't play since beta and really only watched some hyped up matches of GSL. I'm looking forward to TLS3 thou.

Also i'm T player in both SC and SC2  8)

I own and have played both through, but have never played multiplayer. The simple reason is I doubt my ability to spam click competitively. Even in FPS I am at the top of most scoreboards but I probably take the 1/3 the shots that most others. I'm just too deliberate. I do enjoy watching the esports though.

You can be a strong toss player without spam click

The ranking thingy helps a lot with that, at least in 2, since you get paired up with people who win about as often as you do.

Also, clickspam isn't everything. It helps, but a thousand APM doesn't do anything if you don't know when to expand, how to scout, or why to build X to counter Y.

Also also, custom maps. You might like Desert Strike.

It's a common misconception that RTS-es require a click-spam ability to play well.

What usually matters is the strength of mind, ability to concentrate and keep a cool head. Knowledge about the game also helps greatly and is more important than APM (actions per minute). Thats also why  SC progamers are good at games like poker, since both require mental strength and stamina. One of the best poker players Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier is a former SC1 progamer.

Some time ago i came across a disabled players topic, and from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GBc6TMjOPM you can see its possible to play and have fun in SC2 even without arms while using standard mouse-keyboard setup everyone uses.

And as IronyOwl already mentioned custom maps can be really nice experience too. Some of them require less clicks than a browser farming game :P

You really don't need high APM to play well, or to enjoy the game. Day9 speculates to be competent you need an APM of between 40-90.

As already stated, for SC, there are several other aspect that matter more then APM.

Day9 futher speculates that you don't even need to micro all that hard to even do well. That developing those crazy micro tactics, that Marine King Prime uses, or those insane Forcefield placement that HuK been known to throw down, is just squeezing out ounces of advantage after you've become rather good at the fundamentals.

I haven't played SC2 yet... I don't have a computer that run it well, yet... But when I get my new computer, its going to be the second or first game installed on it. (Dwarf Fortress will probably be first, something to do while the digital download finishes.)

I've been playing BW for freaken ever though. Though I've only recently gotten into the esport side, thanks to Husky. Though I've stopped watching him now, I find his excitement and loudness doesn't make up for his insight into the game.

I'm a heavy Terran player, with playing as zerg as my weakest race. The drone management, just fucks with me. My weakest race to play against was TvP.

I can't wait to play SC2, even though it looks like SC2: Zerg may be released by then.

Mircoing is basically just getting a Advantage, What really matters is scouting, Tactics, Expansion and counters, not spamming the mouse button repeatedly

Extreme Zerg player here, Terrible, Terrible at Terran and about the middle for protoss, Goddamn Flash repeatedly blocking my expansion

I just don't get how you Zerg players can handle that drone management.

Simple.

You don't.

Queuing ties up resources, and gives you a false sense of how well you're doing. Those resources tied up in the queued units can be used to making SCVs, or depots, or barracks or upgrades. Just about anything else will be more productive then queuing units.

This does make make macroing a wii bit harder though.

I don't even understand how you bring in so many units so fast as Terran, even with parallel rax and parallel ports and parallel everything. Zerg is so much simpler with hatcheries and one or two buildings for all units.

I can't seem to get out of Bronze 1v1, but I'm blaming that on me never using cheese moves like all-in roaches or 6-pool.

Also due to the fact that I've become addicted to TD custom maps.
