Do I really need Justice
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:39:04 am »

My mayor went bonkers from not having his mandates met.  Which is fine by me because they were stupid mandates.  When looking at my Justice list, I noticed that he sentenced himself to imprisonment for failing to meet a production order.  As fun as that might have been to see my mayor leading himself away in cuffs telling himself that he had the right to remain silent or be smashed over the head with a warhammer and then ordering himself to smash himself over the head with a warhammer...

My current mayor likes it when I make battleaxes and boots, which is fantastic.  I'll use those a lot more than billon statues.

It seems like the upsides (ignoring stupid mandates; dwarves not dying in prison from starvation/dehydration; your idiot noble going insane, stripping naked and running around babbling dying of starvation because people don't follow his stupid orders) outweigh the downsides (some dwarf being upset that his idiot noble friend went insane and stripped naked and ran around babbling until he died of starvation, .... uhh .... I can't think of any other downsides) is there any real reason to have a Justice system?

Keeping nobles happy...which makes YOU unhappy. So, no. Since lazy, idiotic nobles are no good at all at the moment, when they issue that a dwarf is to be hammered 'til death, fling them in the old Pit o'Doom.

With several chains built and set as individual rooms to be used by justice, the whole problem of criminals hammered-to-death disappears. They only get from 30 to a 100 days in jail. With a bed, a small booze stockpile and a small food stockpile, they won't die from bodily needs.

Or simply leave the sheriff/captain of the guard post vacant.

Some mandates are plain stupid, but as long as none of my dwarves are killed in the process, it's fine by me.

Still you will have dwarves that do absolutely nothing skulking around the fort making demands of slade crowns and such.

I say give'em the old, warm, fuzzy embrace of magma.

When the outpost liason asks who do you wanna promote, just promote your worst dwarf(the hauler that was once a novice cheesemaker and has NO social skills at all). He'll probably feel really happy with all the power he got. Then he will be dead.

Alternatively check all your dwarves' interests and likes in order to find someone who will mandate solely hatchcovers, statues and doors made of an ore you have in abundance ;)

I just had a baroness go wonky for no reason and bitchslap a hammerlord into the hospital with 2 hits. It happend so fast I never even saw the messages until the hammerlord suffocated in the hospital. So I locked the baroness in her bedroom till she was near death and calmed down.  Next time I wont be so forgiving.

I wish there was way to throw the her into the arena with the gobs. ( let's give that grand mosuleum a workout )

Have all the bugs surrounding this been ironed out? If not, leave the game on the baron selection screen, open a new instance of the game, and peruse your dwarves there.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

This is all kind of what I had figured.  I couldn't come up with any serious downsides to no justice, other than the noble going bonkers.  Which, if he's making ridiculous demands, is probably for the best anyway.  Now I need to check all my dwarves for the one to be nominated for baron.  Preferably someone who likes obsidian and mugs...

Since you can pick your nobles it isn't that hard to find one who likes stuff that is easy to make and/or you are making anyway. Mine ask mostly for gauntlets, hatch covers, flutes and earrings. One likes sterling silver. They can all be made of waste stone or bone and sent straight to the atom smasher except the sterling silver and since I have tetrahedrite making the odd sterling silver object is no big deal. The only time justice can be useful is when a tantrum spiral is starting, since throwing the miserable dwarves into a jail that gives them happy thoughts will stop them from killing anyone or having to be put down.

Justice actually is pretty good at stopping tantrum spirals,  when a dwarf goes bannanas and breaks something or hurts someone, putting them in chains gives a happy thought to every offended dwarf as well as all the friends of the offended dwarf which will make them less likely to go insane as well,   If you have masterwork gold chains, masterwork beds, waterfalls and redily accessable food for your prisoners,  they'll spend their sentance soaking up happiness and get the strongest happy thought in the game once their sentance is up.

there is.   make a hallway with a channeled out tile covered with a hatch connected to a lever on an adjacent tile above your arena,  assign the lever so only your noble is allowed to pull it,  then give the pull order.   the noble will happily pull the "break my legs and send me to the goblins"  switch.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

As malroth pointed out, a justice system can stop tantrum spirals. I almost got a tantrum with a lucky ambush who killed a cat and two dwarfs. 3-4 dorfs started a tantrum, destroy things and punching others. My captain of the guard intervene, beat the fuck out of the criminals and send to the jail to think of their mistakes, and stopped the tantrum spiral. Some dwarfs are still unhappy, and one become mad and killed himself, but that's it.

Also, a guy in the forums had a jail party running for months in his fort!

TBH I'm not sure I'd want to stop a tantrum spiral.

If things got that bad in my fortress, I probably deserve it.  Pretty much everyone right now is ecstatic from all the masterwork food and booze available from my legendary chefs that they eat in the legendary dining room, the legendary meeting area with the legendary golden statue garden, etc...  To get bad enough to cause a tantrum spiral I'd have to screw up pretty badly.  (Look at me, tempting fate!!!)

Then again, if I made a legendary jail, it wouldn't make any difference.
