Wait, I forgot what this means...
« on: March 16, 2011, 04:33:00 am »

So, upon embark, the game told me "A section of the cavern has collapsed!"

And later when I was looking through stuff I noticed an interesting item.
...
...
...
An adamantine scimitar.

I forgot what these things are. Are they omens? Am I fortunate? I can't rember for the life of me.

Considering the fact I have never encountered such a thing in my life and my curious nature, should I pick another embark location?

Nah, just back up the save and go look. Watch out for the undead though.

The question is: what would Urist do?
Urist would sleep on it. In a flaming bed menacing with spikes with a corpse in it.

...Then he would come to the conclusion that he should go and borrow a -+cat leather sock+- from his neighbors in the demonic fortress because his got burnt up while sleeping in the bed.

Wiki up "curious structure" but be aware that it's a spoiler.  I would suggest you go digging, and find out for yourself.  After all, forts are expendable, there's also a new set of dwarves - indeed a whole new world - just a few button presses away.  Enjoy the opportunity to be surprised, and strike the earth!

But just to hold onto it. Urist doesn't believe in new clothes.

Do it for !!Fun!!

The whole point of being able to make a new fort is being able to destroy it spectacularly in the end. Or you could just take up the challenge and beat back the spoilers that happen. Make a plan, be dorfy.

oooh a demonic fortress candy shop.

That's a spoiler  :P

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

The "curious underground structure" is a very fun thing to play with. It's the 0.31.xx equivalent of the "Eerie glowing pit" from 40d. If you want a quick look at it use dfreveal.exe in the dfhack library. Tackling it is one of the most fun things I've tried in Dwarf Fortress.

You are most fortunate. I spent a week or so trying to embark on one of those without success & eventually got bored & gave up.

I bursted out laughing so hard at this that my dog woke up, came in the room, and looked at me like I'm an idiot.

Then proceeded to brag about how he has 27 kills on his kill list and is super-doggenly tough.

You should steal it and then sell it for endless amounts of booze from the next caravan.
