At the risk of a minor derail... I'm considering finally being brave and getting a Dark Souls game. Not sure which one to get though. I never play that type of game at all, and generally shy away from anything really difficult, or anything that punishes you for failure. I'm trying to get over my risk aversion, part of the reason I want to give this a try.

That's actually a very helpful recommendation, thanks. All signs are pointing to DS1 right now, so I'll probably get that. Aw man, I'm scared already! :P

EDIT: I also find it kind of amusing that people always say "you have to learn to be patient and cautious". I'm always patient and cautious. I never rush into anything in games, not even in something like Minecraft. I'm too scared of what will jump out at me. So this is going to be a real test for me - either that, or it will be very easy for me. :P

Yay, B12 is back alive! Unfortunately though Steam is still currently down(https://steamstat.us/) entirely. Some hacker groups are claiming credit for DDOSing it, but nothing confirmed yet.

Humble store is giving away copies of GRID for roughly a day from the time of this post. Keys from it need to be redeemed by the end of the month.

Steam: Entire X series (including X3: TC and AP) is on sale as a bundle for $10.
---
That's one of the fun bits of the Soulsborne games. As you learn more about a piece of equipment or an area you naturally become more comfortable with it. As you progress further in most games, this is compounded by your gear and levels scaling past an area. That second part? Not so true in Soulsborne games. You go back to an early area right before you finish the game and you can still get stomped if you get lazy or cocky and don't take it seriously.

For a player like you, DS1 is probably ideal, since the combat itself is also relatively slow-paced and cautious. Attacks don't come out lightning-quick, enemies (with some exceptions) aren't moving around at sanic speeds, but the same applies to you. DS3 drew on Bloodborne's very fast-paced combat and, although it's still slower than that, tends to emphasize it a lot more. DS1, mostly the big thing that you need to have good reflexes and timing for is parrying and roll-backstabbing.

I disagree. In DS 1 and 2 magic was easy mode, yes, but in 3 you have to go up to 60 Int and use only gear that buffs magic damage (Dusk Crown, both rings, offhand candlestick, etc) and then, you might be able to cast one or two Crystal Soul Spears that do maybe 20 more damage than smacking someone with a straight sword and take twice as long to cast those as it does to swing a weapon. It's just kind of annoying to see a particular play style nerfed so hard.

To be fair, I uninstalled before the DLC came out so maybe it's a little better now.
Not at all. DS3 Pyromancer is by far the easiest start, and will carry you a good way through NG with basically zero effort. Other magic styles are also strong early, as always. You only really need the exclusively magic-oriented builds for melting people in PvP, which is as it should be--the strongest melee builds are also highly specialized. Yeah, if you do a JoAT build and don't do much to improve your magic, it's gonna suck, and probably a little more than your equally mediocre melee, but that's mostly because raw gems exist and there are decent low-req weapons.

I don't use magic much myself, but there's plenty of examples out there of people stomping shit with it.

SL 82 pure pyromancy
Sorcery invasion is hard
Lets' not forget the people that only use dark spells
miracles only useful for 1hp builds and Force trolling, right?

I mean god damn man, PvP meta SL is ~100-130, you'd better have either 60 or 40/40 in your primary/primaries at that point, and specialized gear to match it. If you're dipping a little bit of everything and still staying in the meta range of course you're going to be worse at everything than a specialist.

I continue to disagree, but we've derailed the thread enough. Suffice to say I am not a PvPer and all my experience with Souls games is offline solo, and I've certainly put in my share of time on the PS3 - I just bought the first two games in the series on Steam to support From.

Fair enough.

Yeah, the offline experience is probably a tad different. Any melee build is technically viable given sufficient skill since your resources are unlimited, but with magic if you have a weak build you're going to run out of resources faster than you run out of enemies. That said, that's only really a problem late in NG onward, early on your raw damage is pretty absurd and you don't even need to worry about the biggest challenge of free-aiming spells since AI enemies don't dodge much/well enough to throw off locked spells.

Steam is back up!

EDIT: And... Apparently Dark Souls 1 frequently goes on sale for 75% off, and this time it's only 45% off. So... I guess I'll be waiting to buy it anyway. Sigh... I was looking forward to that.

There are some pretty good sales on the Google play store at the moment. King of Dragon Pass is on sale for 50 % off. It works pretty well on mobile, I bought it about a week ago at full price and I have no regrets.

I keep hearing that this game is good, but when I look in the Play store it's never there. Nothing. Is it possibly region-locked somehow? I'm in the EU...

EDIT: Okay, found it online and it says it's incompatible with my device because I have "no carrier". Presumably you need a smartphone with a phone number to play it, so tablets are blocked? Why?

So, every XCOM 2 DLC has -33% discount in Steam Store. I'm planning to revisit XCOM 2 after the New Year. What DLC are worth my time?

Shen's Last gift - adds content, you likely want this.
Alien Hunters - Adds content, some find it makes the game too hard, others enjoy the added difficulty.
Anarchy's Children - cosmetics only.
Resistance Warrior - Cosmetics + an extra starting soldier. This was the preorder bonus, so if you preordered you should already have it. It is also the only dlc not discounted in the sale.

So essentially, Shens Last gift is the definite want, if you decide you want the extra challenge of Alien Hunters as well then get the Reinforcement Pack as that gives you the cosmetic pack for a couple of pence extra.

I've played Dragon Pass on a tablet with no phone guts at all. Also on a phone with no simcard. Both USA.

Steam and Android I think are the same version. GOG is an older version. New version is expanded and cleaned up.

The last time I promoted Dragon pass on here, we found out there was an alien living among us.

Anyway, the game is amazing. I highly recommend it.

In all my life of owning a phone, I've only ever bothered to buy two games for it. Dragon pass was one. Out there was the other.
