I dunno about $20.

A lot of the DLC is pointless.

Hrm, I'd buy it like this:

SR2 @ $2.5
SR4 @ $5
SR3 @ $3.75

At those prices it's definitely worth it.

Edit: By the way, Saints Row 4 has my favorite gun of any video game gun ever. The dubstep gun. I don't even like dubstep.

Is that really a game series that you need to play the priors?

Not quite the point I was trying to make.

So yeah, you're probably pretty fine. Which isn't a qualifier I'd have to give if I'd bothered to play them myself after purchasing them.

There it is.  I have SR2 and SR3 in my Steam backlog, along with so many other unplayed games.  I've decided not to add more.

I actually ended up buying SR2 during a previous sale when I was partway through playing SR4, because I was running into characters who hadn't been in SR3 and I had no clue who they were or what was going on. For SR3 you really don't need to know what happened in SR2, but in SR4 you might get confused if you haven't played both SR2 and 3 (Of course they also included characters from SR1...).

Personally I only played SR2 to find out who everyone was and what happened (and skipped the activities for the most part). It has performance issues and some bugs, but worked well on Windows 8.1 aside from having a lower framerate when driving at high speed. (Apparently there are issues with it running at the wrong speed in Windows 7 or something)

I liked SR3 a lot more than SR2, myself, but I played it before SR2 (or 4), so because I enjoyed 3 so much I was expecting 2 to be like 3 (instead of the other way around for people who played SR2 first).

SR4 parodies a bunch of different things, and it's entertaining on that level as well as being fun as a game IMHO. All the missions that have to do with the plot are good, the Santa expansion was memorable, the superpowers are fun, the combat is pretty good, and the story is entertaining, except it bogs down in the middle since most of the missions your homies give you are "do these activities on the map and then come back." You don't actually have to do them all - you get a different ending if you don't, according to the wiki.

Personally, I loved SR2 - the biggest flaw is that the port had been cocked up massively by a third party, plus a subpar feel to driving cars. It has a cool storyline, the combat feels much better than in 3 and 4 (3+ weapons feel really limp and weak for some reason, in comparison), fun sidequests and is in general quite memorable. And I played SR3 first.

SR3 is OK but forgettable, really. The plot is essentially a rehash of 2's with less in terms of villain motivation. It amounts to 'there are three gangs that are a part of one organization, find allies, destroy other gangs'. It's not *bad*, I had fun with it, but it's passable. SR4 pretty much rendered it obsolete by bumping up the increased silliness, which was the main selling point really, up to eleven. The fact that a bunch of story missions by the mid-point are 'here's a story mission that forces you to play through a side activity' was annoying, but at least they've done away from forcing you to do them to gain access to missions.

SR4 depends on what do you want. Where SR1 was a GTA clone, SR4 is essentially a Prototype clone mechanics-wise. The story has its SWEET MOTHER OF JESUS H. BATMAN moments, plus a tooooooooooooooooon of continuity porn for long-time fans and decent parody of damn nigh everything on top of that. Notably, they used the framing device to justify the weirdest of level concepts. Story-wise, it's fun, but it's almost explicitly a superhero game WITH SAINTS!!one!

Oh, and re: Female 1 - it's Laura Bailey, what did you expect? :P

Well it's 14 bucks with all of the expansions for the games, so that's ~4.67 per game.

GOG has all the russian rebooted King's Bounty games on sale:
http://www.gog.com/promo/kings_bounty_dark_side_launch_promo_130115

Sure they have their issues, but as far as fun HOMM-likes go, it's a worthwhile series (with the caveat that I haven't played the newer half of the games on sale).

Steam Weekly deals actually has a game I wouldn't feel bad about recommending, Sang-Froid Tales of Werewolves:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227220/

It's mid 19th century Canada. Your homestead is plagued by devil possessed wolves (and worse). One portion of the game is you setting up traps around your property. Passive "wolves run over, wolves die" kinda traps and other types that require more active participation from the player. Once you've set your traps, you trigger nighttime in which you commandeer your lumberjack from the third person. What follows is you using your axe & musket (with appropriately lengthy load times) to ward off waves of varying enemies utilizing your gear and traps. Game flow is a series of 3rd person action nights divided by preparatory day time during which you purchase supplies and set traps with limited budget of money & time.

Speaking of SR4, it's a free weekend.

Also Civ: Beyond Earth, which I'm going to be checking out.

I have no idea where to put this so I'll hijack this thread.

I have three spare Monster Hunter 4U demo codes for the 3DS. If you want them, send me a PM.

Note, just in case it's not clear: it's the whole SR series (well, except the original) that's on a free weekend, not just SR4.

Same here. I don't really have any interest in the series, but I'd be glad to give them away.

Saints Row 3 is pretty forgettable and also very short. The cast of characters is pretty cool though, but other than that it's not particularly impressive. Also they did that whole "let's kill the interesting villain straight off, then replace him with an unlikable moron".

It's on the short side, but I don't think I'd say it's "very short". I played 38 hours, and that was one full playthrough and about 25% of another, so call it about 30 hours for a moderate completionist playthrough (I did most, but not all of the side missions). That's with no DLC, by the way - the story DLC add 1 - 3 hours each or so I've read.

But the most important part is that every single one of those hours was enjoyable. There's really no major filler or padding, they cut all the dull bits and "srs bsns" out of GTA, took the remaining fun parts, added a huge dose of silliness and made a whole game out of it.

I agree with you about the villain part though, that was kind of a letdown.

I think it's a really excellent game, and $3.75 is absurdly cheap, it's *easily* worth that and everyone should at least consider buying it while it's on sale.

Have not played SR4 yet so I can't comment on that one.
