2 has a much higher active player base. 1's player base will shrink pretty rapidly as most people get over the "oo shiny" from getting it for free.
That's about the only real reason I can give you though.

The preorder was on sale on Green Man Gaming (only 20% off), but it looks like that ended with the release.  GamersGate has nothing, and likewise with Steam.  I'm afraid I don't really see anything now that it's out.

Despite claims to the contrary, from the footage is still seems like mostly a reskin of Civ 5... I'm personally waiting until I see more of it. And if it's anything like the other Civs, if I wait 1 or 2 years I can get it super cheap with all the expansions which actually make the game good.

I want to know if it's another Alpha Centauri, or if it's just pretending to be.  So I'll be waiting a couple months to see how people react (and then how they react once they've gotten used to the changes, like with XCOM)

I know a bunch of people here have knee-jerk reactions to the Yogscast, but some of them are playing Beyond Earth on YouTube.

All I recall from the first video is that the tech web is weird.
