Free Space Open is based on FS2, yes. So all the shiny graphics and whatnot should be available. Never tried FSOpen myself though.

Hotline Miami is on sale on steam if you, for some reason, don't have it already. Don't know how much it is in dollars due to localized price, but should be about a dollar. Truly an excellent game.

It is showing as 85% off / US$1.49 for me, in 'Murrica.

IMO, Elemental: Fallen Enchantress/Legendary Heroes (whichever one is the most recent release) is still shoddy. It does equipment better, but if you want a fantasy 4X game, just get Civ4 Complete and Fall from Heaven (or various FFH modmods and modmodmods).

It has absolutely nothing on Master of Mana and MoM should not be denigrated by trying to compare Elemental to MoM*.

*I've actually never played MoM itself, (FFH and its subprojects, some HoMMs, and Age of Wonders are my experiences with fantasy TBS) but all flavours of Elemental are really lacking. The biggest difference in an empire's strategy is whether they're realistically magic-capable or not, or when they have access to unique (but usually borderline inconsequential) equipment. Tech and magic research may as well not even exist. The tactical combat maps are also poorly done, in terms of actually being able to apply any kind of actual tactics to your combat. It doesn't even have actual random map generation; resources are randomized but the map shape is selected from a variety of presets. I think there's about a dozen by default, even shared (more or less) across map sizes. Not sure if you can go looking for more (e.g. whether a map making tool exists for community use).

I'm glad Kael got an actual paid job out of his work with FFH, but its too bad that job is the impossible task of cleaning up Wardell's mess. Maybe he can polish it up a bit more and add some newer/deeper mechanics, but the basic design/mechanics are still limited, and if you're going so deep as to fix those you may as well scrap it all code-wise and start over.

IMO, Elemental: Fallen Enchantress/Legendary Heroes (whichever one is the most recent release) is still shoddy.<snip>

In my opinion, it is on the contrary quite good. Having played Master of Magic extensively in the past, I have to say that FE:LH captures most of the feel of that game. Not all, true, and it does have severe... deviations from the original, but since it's not meant to be a carbon copy I find that's quite alright. Also, wrong - the biggest differentiating factor in an empire's strategy is how well its resources are positioned, and how many and what kinds of champions it can field. Magic, aside from the obvious benefits in buffing units and cities, doesn't perform nearly well enough to be considered the cornerstone of strategy for any given side. Well-equipped and well-balanced hordes of soldiers still work like a charm, with or without a wall of fireballs backing them up, but key abilities and equipment fielded by champions can frequently turn the tide of battle.

And while I can't attest to randomness of the map generator (haven't been paying attention much, but even if what you say is true, the resources alone make every map unique), I'd like to point out that the map editor has been built into the thing since the earliest days of the game. Along with a faction editor, a map tile editor, and even a particle effect editor, on top of the ingame unit editor.

A warning about FreeSpace 2 on Steam. It doesn't work. At all.

You'll need to download FSO in order to run it at all. That's a fairly roundabout way of getting around it though. I expect games to run when I pay for them without having to go through all this especially if the game is advertised as being compatible with modern systems.

Also, the minimum requirements say the game is 2,490GB. Obviously a typo but still.

I'm personally waiting for a GoG sale so I don't have to bother with it.

Its not like FSO hurts to have anyway but yes, If they need it to work, it should be mentioned.

Steam's got one of those advertising "refer a friend" pyramid schemes going. You click someone's link, get your own, then post it in hopes of it getting clicked in turn.

I feel ashamed posting this, but a $20 steam card does sound rather nice. With mutual sharing and clicking we could probably all get at least the 20.

EDIT: It was a traffic scam anyway, I shall have to punish myself somehow.

It's probably best to start another thread for those links. This is the SALES thread, not the LINK WHORING thread. I imagine B12 could do pretty good with this.

It's massive, so a server might be half the continent away as far as you know, and officials that are bribable, and no constant surveillance of all data.

Of course I am stupid for replying to a post on another site here, but:

Why would a Steam promotion be run on something (anything) other than steampowered.com?
