Wait, no sex in the 1st game?

I don't get the Mass Effect games. The shooting parts are fun. but if I wanted to spend hours walking around a place with useless NPCs, I'd play a Bethesda game.

#1: They aren't useless. While you are usually the one who will do most of the work, they do definitely help.
#2: Some of them can have very compelling backstories, and often their character development seems natural. They feel like actual characters in a book rather than tag-alongs. I'm guessing you really just dealt with Ashley and Kaidan, who have the lamest backstories of the bunch and are unfortunately the first ones you meet, but I could be wrong and you've played through all the games and still don't feel connected, in which case all I can offer is a shrug.
#3: They can help drive the plot, and your interactions with them will definitely influence how the whole thing ends up.

I find that BioWare does teammate NPCs way better than Bethesda. Like overwhelmingly so. I also think that BioWare games tend to have better stories.

Oh I don't mean companions. I mean everyone else.

You should probably know that in neither of the first two games I have managed to navigate myself out of the first story/RPG/whatever area...
So I was basically stuck drinking liquor that knocks me out and not much else :v

That's not a fair comparison and you know it. :P

The real question is which company is more formulaic! (Ps the answer is Bioware)

It is especially funny when two entirely separate Bioware games have the exact same character in it down to the voice actor, mannerisms, and even most of their backstory.

Though I shouldn't complain. I love Mission, I'd want her in all my Bioware games if she didn't tend to suck.

I understand not liking a game, but I don't get this "if I wanted X I would play Y instead". "If I wanted to move pieces across a board I'd play checkers" is not a very good critique of chess...

If you're interested, I dug this record off the Internet Archive. The blog vanished sometime mid-2009; the linked post is the last archived copy before it turned into a Flash game dump.

Most of the images are broken, but the text is still readable!

Thanks!  I'm impressed he managed to get all the way to We Got Hostiles using the arrow keys instead of WASD... and switching his hand from the arrows to the mouse whenever he needed to aim.  And he says he has bad reflexes, ha!  I think most gamers would have trouble with Office Complex under that system.

Something as simple as getting into a crawlspace posed a new challenge when trying to use WASD. I wanted to crouch without moving my right hand off the mouse. My default setting has been the cntrl key but I think may move it over to the mouse some way or maybe use the A key and switch the movement keys to ESDF. Who knows? It's a work in progress.

I remember switching from arrow keys (Descent, Unreal 1) to WASD when playing HL deathmatch with friends in a computer lab.  It really is tough, though it was easier with friends to point out things like the left ctrl key.

That's okay, back in the early to mid nineties we all used the arrow keys and didn't think anything of it!

I think if you're playing HL1, HL2 now, it's hard to appreciate them as much as we did when they first came out.  HL1's engine was phenomenal for the time and spawned some of the most popular mp games ever (Counterstrike, TFC, DoD, the original Natural Selection).  It also spawned Steam.  It's not the first story-oriented FPS but it was certainly the most polished for its time, with some innovative weapons and enemies and a focus on in-engine story-telling.  HL1/Thief raised the bar for what had been mindless shoot em up's, resulting in the Deus Ex's and BioShock's we take for granted now.

And that's the thing for me. I played them when they came out, and disliked them, as well as disliking all those other games you listed. It's not a dislike for first person shooters, no way, I was the one wholeheartedly recommending FarCry 2 a few pages back. I think it's just a severe dislike for a certain style of shooter.

Carrier Command: Gaea Mission is 90% off right now. First/Third person/top-down tactical action-RTS with management elements. If you had a Spectrum at some point, you have to have played the original. The remake is quite good.

Steam's family library sharing just made managing games between my old and new accounts that much more user-friendly. Furthermore, I don't need to re-purchase old games I already own from my old account, and now I can gain double the achievements!! (yes it is possible, and no, I am not that crazy. Though I can possibly trade between old and new accounts. Hmm...)

Nonetheless, I'm happy enough not having to do more fiddling around with my old games between accounts, and all I had to do was flip a switch on my accounts to make it work out. YAY! Despite my old account officially owning, I own both accounts, so no big whoop. Nice to have more convenient access to my old account's crap again.

EDIT:
Now that I come and think of it, anyone else with up to 5 (self-owned) accounts on the same machine, as limited by Steam, can exploit the hell out of the trading system now, especially where the cards are concerned.

EDIT EDIT:
Sorry to brag, but thanks to my old account, I have a game no longer for sale anymore (have fun finding it, it's no longer listed). That game, a fun classic of Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast. I feel special now.

Is that the one made by Bohemia? I remember I watched a video of it a while ago. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that, like the rest of their games, I won't be able to run it on my PoS computer.

It's poorly optimised. I'd suggest avoiding it unless you have newer, stronger rig.

EDIT: Don't buy this game. On top of poor optimisation, it has terribad pathfinding AI and no multiplayer. The game plays really blandly as a single in my experience. I am occupied making sure my vehicles don't get suck instead of giving commands.
