Ninja'd!  By three days!  Curses!

I'm not even sure if I even read Dutchling's post.  If it's on the previous page, it doesn't exist, you know.

I just picked up all of the Assassin's Creed games up to and including III. $27 seemed like a good deal, seeing as the PSP games were generally enjoyable.

I fired up the first game with a 360 pad plugged in. It's a mark of quality that they have builtin support for 360 pads but the buttons are mapped wrong.

There are some wicked cheap games/bundles in "weeklong deals" section. I don't know much about the majority of them but...Commandos Collection for 1,79€? Dammit, I like GoG and all but...this is really tempting.

Fair warning on that, several of the older commandos run funny, aka really friggin' fast. Not sure if they fixed that yet, but I was dissapointed when I got it on sale a year ago.

I did in fact decided to check around as bit after my post and it's as you said, thanks for the warning. There seem to be available fixes for known problems though. One person commented that for a >2€, it worth spending some time looking for and applying unofficial patches and that doesn't sound too unreasonable. Of course, one wonders why you should give money to people at Steam who apparently cannot be bothered to properly prepare old games like that for newer systems...

It's a shop.  I highly doubt they have access to the source code.

Eh, I'm not talking about having access to source code. But when you have sites like GoG which, in lots if not most cases, go to great length to assure the game you bought is working as properly without the need for you to search for possible fixes because they do that for you, well, you have to understand why some people would feel at least tad bit annoyed with what Steam is doing.

I too have had bad experience with older games on Steam.  GoG seems to do a lot more research and/or just doesn't sell games which won't work right on modern computers.  Steam does provide a convenient community forum.

For instance, Farcry 2.  First time I ran it half the NPCs were randomly bouncing 10 feet in the air constantly, and the script broke right after fleeing the burning building.  This is a known issue with Windows 7, fixed by setting the FPS-cap with a command line argument.  So I did, and now it works (though it gets oddly laggy at times).  I don't expect them to fix the odd lag, or the NPCs rushing through their lines at 1.5x speed, but it should have used that FPS-cap argument by default on affected systems.

Gothic 1? Did you try disabling the steam overlay?

Space Empires IV Deluxe and V (and the pack containing both) are 75% off on Steam until March 3, so if any of you  wanted to get them and were waiting for a sale...

If you don't have either, the pack with both ($4.99) is cheaper than buying them separately ($2.49 for IV and $3.74 for V), at least in the US.

5 pretty much requires mods and those are version dependent. Steam's autoupdater has always been fiddly for me. I can turn it on or off and it may or may not stick to that or it might change the setting itself. I would much rather get hard copies of older games or use GOG. 5 is not on GOG but you can find sealed box copies for under $10. You could probably find boxed copies in retail stores still. Old games find their way into places like Big Lots as some pallet is found in a warehouse somewhere and finds its way back onto shelves. Wait for a GOG sale on 4. There's better support over there and you can mod to your heart's content.

RPS has some news about Steam's sales scheme.

For me, the takeaway is that there is now a type of sale that doesn't show up in the front page specials list.  (Possibly the 'see all specials' list as well.)

It sounds like you have to view the specific game pages to see these Developer Discounts.

This will make it harder to discover sales.

And this has just justified my drive to wishlist any games I'm interested in.

For little less than an day, Red Faction: Guerrilla is off 75%, making it 2,49€.

Grab it.
It's a really fun building-destruction simulation. Use rockets, handheld explosives or just a heavy hammer to bring down walls, multi-storey houses or whole bridges. Terrain itself cannot be modified, sadly, but some limitations in an open world game like this are to be expected.

Oh, there's also story, shooting bad guys and driving many different kinds of vehicles/mechs around the varied environments of Mars.

But you'll be mostly bringing down buildings.
That's all you'll really wanna do.
Trust me.

Only bad thing is that "Games for Windows Live" shenanigans, but according to some reports, this will be patched out eventually.

On the other note: both Nazi Zombie Army 1 & 2 are 75% off. Any reason why one would pick both instead of just one?
