Hrm. Guess I'll hold off then. It's a bit expensive at the moment anyway.

On another:
Jagged Alliance 2: Gold on Steam. Worth it? Or should I go for JA2 and JA2UB on GoG instead?
Anyone?

The only upside for the for the gog version would be drm free. (And it's more likely to have support to help you if things go wrong).

If things do go impossibly wrong you can get a refund from GOG.

Since when is Steam DRM? It only matters if you want to move the game somewhere that doesn't have Steam installed.

But then again I pay less in RUR on Steam than you do in dollars, so I may be biased there.

I don't mind the DRM, but I heard the Gold Version actually had some censorship, which is rather credible given that it is rated T instead of GOG's versions, which are rated M.

There are apparently some labor needed in applying the unofficial patches, but that's tolerable though.

It is a (very reasonable) DRM, though.  Installing your games on a new computer relies on the Steam servers being up, and they won't be around *forever*.  For the longest time you could only log in from one computer at a time, too, so you couldn't share any of your games while playing one.  Not that you're ever supposed to share your account whatsoever.  I think they added some Netflix-style account sharing system, though.

I'm not sure what the rules are for playing without an internet connection.  I've been locked out of all my games due to the servers being unreachable, but it seems more lenient now.

GoG installers just install the game on whatever you run them on, then the game is on that computer.  No digital rights management.

I use Steam a lot more than GoG, and I'm really satisfied with it.  It is DRM, though.

Some people have legitimate reasons to dislike Steam, including those who live in countries where Steam charges more for no particular reason.

Myself, I dislike Steam because I live in an area without internet. Not bad internet, no internet. I only have access when I'm at university. Steam gets really bitchy when you don't have near constant internet access, and sometimes just refuses to let me play certain single-player games when I've been without internet access for a while. I don't know about you, but I prefer to have access to my games when I want to, which is why I generally prefer to get games not on steam. Yes, it used to be worse, a lot worse, but it still annoys the hell out of me that due to virtue of where I live, I can't have constant access to the games I payed for that are on my computer.

I have a laptop near-constantly online and logged into Steam, and I play Steam games on my Win8 tablet in offline mode. I transfer games from my laptop to my tablet the same way new libraries are established - just copy the game folder and the app file, and you're good to go.

Steam really only needs you connected to the net intermittently to update, and any game that does not by itself require an internet connection will run fine offline.

Steam has worked flawlessly on my travel laptop for years in offline mode. If a particular game requires an online connection that is something the game's developer/publisher added in, not steam.

I hope you understand that I am only speaking from my personal experience. I go without internet for 3+ months at a time, and after a couple months, Steam starts getting really sketchy, and randomly denies you access to games. It`ll also attempt to update games, and then crash. That`s why I dislike Steam.

EDIT: ninja`d by forsaken. Maybe Steam just hates me/I`m Steaming wrong :P

That said, I do love having all my games in one convenient place when I have internet, and if my computer bricks, I don`t need to worry about hunting down a million CD`s.

Except some people have problems. You haven't, and that's good for you, but the whole computer thing means different systems and different results. It's a thing that happens. I've personally had steam do some pretty off stuff, both on and offline, which is why when I actually need it running I tend to just suspend the bloody thing so it shuts up. More nuisance than anything, but the price is right.

... shouldn't this discussion be happening in a different thread, though?
