A mate bought it over the weekend and let me have a go - it's not great. It's VERY shallow.
- You can only have a limited number of ship designs, four in each of the four 'sizes'
- Building on planets is limited to clicking 'upgrade' on five categories (Trade, Recreation, Industry, Farming, Research) and there are four or five 'levels' for each
- The only other things that can be built are a barracks, a missile battery, a space station and a ship station
- Combat is very basic - move, point, shoot - tactics are insignificant
- Capturing planets is lifeless
- Planets do have the occasional special feature - such as an abandoned or ancient site, which if 'dug' can provide a research boost...but not much else besides that
- Research feels limp - you can't quite set individual percentage points, you can either accelerate ONE at the expense of others or leave it relatively evenly spread
- There isn't a huge amount to research
- Weaponry is simply levelled up, you don't actually research many (if any) brand new weapons
- You can't directly upgrade your ships to new designs - you have to simply 'hope' that they do so automatically at a ship yard when orbiting a planet with one
- Diplomacy feels dull, the individual races don't really have too much to make them individual
- One minute races you've just met are fine with you, the next they're WE HATE YOU, YOU MUST DIE!
- Sometimes your ships will attack friendly ships, just for fun. That can also cause the above...
- Graphics are fine, although look dated by modern standards - that's not me being a graphics whore, I don't mind dated graphics, but they are quite basic in terms of planet types, ship types etc.
For me, this is nowhere near adequate when considering the wealth of other options available. It's certainly not a MoO2 beater - and I'm pretty certain I even had more fun with MoO3...
