Just to be clear, the trading cards don't actually do anything, right? Just... collectible graphics?

Valve skims off the top. That's what they do.

I believe you can trade in a full set for a special emoticon for chat and an achievement, and points!

I've recently made over 15 dollars selling all the random cards and free TF2 items I have sitting around. I've played a whopping total of a few hours of TF2, all the items are from preorder incentives and crap.

You can make a deck for achievement points and graphics on your user profile. Finishing a deck also gives you a random coupon for another game. I did sell off a bunch of cards for games I didn't care about to pay for the ones I was missing for FTL, Dungeons of Dredmor, and Half-life 2. That's about my limit, though.

Valve skims off the top. That's what they do.

Please, tell us more about how a company who makes money entertaining people is making money by entertaining people. I am SO interested in this.

Just to be clear, the trading cards don't actually do anything, right? Just... collectible graphics?

Steam Trading Cards.
-Games may or may not support trading cards.
-If they support trading cards, they will have a # of card drops available. Once these card drops are consumed, they are gone forever.
-The card drops are periodically received by having the game run, even if you aren't actively playing it. (In my experience, ~1hr between drops)
-You may receive regular cards or foil cards. You may also receive duplicates.
-You will never get all of the cards for a given game going only off of drops.
-If you have all of the cards for a given game, you can combine them into that game's Steam badge. If you have foils of all of the cards for a given game, you get a foil badge.

Steam Badges.
-Completing a badge gives you XP to level up your Steam profile. You may also receive things such as trade-able emoticons, special background graphics for your profile, etc.

Steam Profile.
-When you level up your profile, you may receive items, such as game price reduction vouchers, emoticons, backgrounds and trading card booster packs.
-The higher level your profile is, the more eligible you are to randomly receive booster packs. You enter to win a booster pack by logging on sometime during the week.
-Experience for profile levels increases every 10 levels. Levels 1-10 are 100 XP (One badge's worth), while Levels 11-20 are 200 XP (Two badges' worth). Beyond that, I don't know. The highest level (worth getting, anyway, I don't know if it goes past this) is 50, which doubles your chance to receive a booster pack every week.

That's about everything there is to know about the trading cards, badges and Steam profiles. Except you also get some other stuff for leveling up your profile, but it's weird, like increasing your friends list limit. I didn't know they had one. *shrug*

I've seen foils go for 90 cents up to just short of $3. I've seen regular cards for as low as 8 cents and all the way to 30 cents. By selling cards, I made enough money to craft enough badges to get to level 10, buy a cheap game, and still have some money left over.

Also, I've only ever gotten two booster packs. One was from leveling up (I'm pretty sure it was anyway), and the other was winning one randomly. It seems to be pretty darn rare on a personal level.

So basically, if I'm not using Steam like a social network, the cards aren't valuable to me. I've never paid much attention to the profiles and I don't buy (or even play) enough games to worry about rare vouchers and such.

I suppose I've used up all my Dredmore card drops. How do I sell them then?

Thanks for the info by the way, very helpful!

Just go to your inventory, click on them, and a sell button will appear with the card info on the right. Hit sell and it'll give you a chart of the sale history for that item, you punch in either the price you want to sell, or how much you want to make after Valves cut, the check agree and click the confirm/accept/whatever it is button.

Access your Steam Inventory by clicking on your username and scrolling down to Inventory. The cards will be there, as will coupons, emoticons, etc. Left click on the card and its details will be viewable to the right of the inventory. You'll then see a green "Sell" button on the bottom of the details panel. When you click it, you'll be brought to a screen that shows the price history graph for the card, and you can highlight the price line to see the exact price and the # of items sold at that price at that time.

When inputting a price to sell your card at, keep in mind that Valve has a ~10% tax, and the values shown on the price history are with that tax included. If people are buying the card at $0.16, you want to sell yours at $0.14. The total value with tax included is also shown, so you don't have to do any math yourself. When you're done, check the Steam Agreement and continue on, then your card will sit on the market until someone buys it.

If your cards/items aren't selling, you can click on Community, go down to Market and View Your Listed Items (or whatever it's called), remove them back to your inventory and resubmit them at different prices.

All money you get from selling items just goes straight to your Steam Wallet.

Thanks for the info by the way, very helpful!

No problem!

Guys, please end this tangent or take it to another thread, I don't want trading card discussions in here as I have stated before.

Apologies!

So is there any chance of Windosill getting a larger discount than it has already? I'm considering just buying it at its current price, since it seems to be fairly obscure... On the other hand, I'd kick myself if I paid more than I had to...

Counter Strike Global Offensive is on sale at 75% off as a Daily Deal. $3.74 USD instead of $15.

Anyone familiar with it? I know CS:Source is supposed to be one of the best FPS games on PC evar. Is Global Offensive superior? Is everyone still playing Source? Thoughts? Opinions?

It's different. I think a lot of people stick to CS:S, but then again many people stick to CS 1.6. From what I've seen as a part of free weekend, it feels more arcadey.

Really, you'd kick yourself over fifty cents or so?  You can't even buy a candy bar for that.

In 2011, it was $1.49 during the November sale, and then dropped to $1.02 for the December sale.  In 2012, it was $1.01 during the June sale, but did not go on sale in November or December.  According to steamgamesales.

So maybe, just maybe, it will have a better discount in December.

But I can't see it popping up on the flash sales.  It's too obscure.  There's only so many slots in the flash sales, and they're usually taken up by games with list price of $10 or higher.

Still, y'know, you can wait until the last day.  Nothing wrong with that.

I got Trine. It was 99 cents. I am 100% ok with this!

I kind of want Saints Row IV, but that's an impossible dream. But if I ever reach that dream in the future, is the game worth it?

So. Wizardry 6, 7, and 8. Less than four bucks for the pack. Worth it? I hear its a difficult series, but it looks fun enough.
