I might pick up Sid Meier's Civilization V Gold Edition if it's still on sale when I get paid this week. Is the $12.99 deal an alright deal?

I'm curious about this one as well.  Civ V got some poor reviews at start, but I've heard both expansions improved on it.  How does it stand now in comparison to release and Civ IV, my favorite of the bunch?

People didn't like it on release because it didn't stand up to Civ 4's 6 years of patches, expansions, and mods. Now that it's been fleshed out, anybody who has enjoyed a game of the series should get it.

Yeah, I played IV and V, both with all expansions, they are somewhat different games due to different approaches to some features, but Civ V + G&K + BNW is a very enjoyable combo, particularly BNW's World Congress introduces a very enjoyable (at least for me) element of politicking (sure, IV had something like it too), and for me, Civ V army/warfare mechanics are SO DAMN MUCH more enjoyable than IV's.

My biggest complaint about V no support for playing mods in multiplayer. OR EVEN IN GODDAMN HOTSEAT. WHY?!

Picked up Civ V Gold when it went on sale for around the second time. Was a huge fan of Civilization IV and its expansions, actually played all the way through a full-on world conquer with the Mongols under the Total Realism mod on the Realistic Earth map. I didn't like the doomstacking from vanilla Civ IV, but the stack mechanics from Total Realism were really, really interesting for me and made the game have a lot more depth. When I was playing Civ V for the first time, I felt like things were dumbed down or there were design choices I wasn't comfortable with, like buying influence squares and trying to curry favor with city states instead of just annexing them ASAP. The lack of unit stacking was weird for me, since it also necessitated the units being more powerful individually so you didn't spam them (you're expected to have wwaaaaaayyyy less units in Civ V than in Civ IV). I also didn't like that ranged units had range since this was supposed to simulate miles of terrain and my archers were theoretically sniping targets over the horizon.

I can't really say that Civ V is a worse game, though. It did do some things better, in my opinion, like the religion system in Gods & Kings. The strategies and tactics are necessarily much different, but there's still depth to Civ V. It just feels more like a board game than IV did.

So I was browsing the steam sales and found an indie game called "Eryi's Action". I was curious enough to click and watch the trailer. ...have you seen those hellishly brutal super mario world rom hacks that people make and show on youtube? It's like an entire game of that. Or a bit like I Wanna Be The Guy (but it doesn't look quite THAT cruel, thank god). It also apparently has bullet hell and jrpg segments? (Seriously, they're in the trailer)

It looks like the sort of thing that's hilarious, but also the sort of thing that would quickly piss me off. I was wondering if anyone has seen or played it before.

Yeah, don't get it if you want combat realism. That's pretty much dead. It's honestly worse than WarCraft III was with DotA.

What you need to do is be in the right circles. For serious things, public servers will never work. I used to play with a group that could put out 40+, 50+ people two times a week and have massive, realistic fights over large geographical areas. It was kickass.

Yeah but I think the key word there is "used to". I was looking into getting into a group for ARMA, but they also required a bunch of mods (they aren't silly ones, at least) and their number count wasn't that high considering they were one of the more active groups for combat realism.

I could be totally wrong and there's a much bigger presence than I saw, though. I just wish it wasn't such a hassle.

Try FolkARPS - no mods required. They're mostly from Europe, but you should be able to do the weekend sessions. I think they are transitioning to Arma 3 these days, but still do some A2 last I checked. If you google for their name you'll also get a ton of youtube videos with how missions go.

Best way is just to show up and play. Check their forums

It's fairly low budget and is entirely designed around the idea of the level blatantly breaking it's own rules, but it can be funny in a "are you fucking kidding me?!" kind of way. Often it's about figuring out what strange way you need to beat the level or memorizing the traps.

So, some people might get a kick out of the game but I would look into it a bit first.

It's also part of a "free weekend" so you can just try it out that way. I've heard it wasn't too great and it was just a bland mash up of Borderlands and Fallout 3 but with less RPG mechanics. I've been tempted to play it just to see THE SUPER ADVANCED ID TECHNOLOGICAL BOBBLES which lackluster implementation was one of the major flaws critics had. Although I recently got Baldur's Gate 2: EE and think that's a much better use of my time.

It's part of that horrid "Kaizo" genre which seems to be made primarily for scumbags like pewdiepie to stream while making rape jokes, helping to decrease the overall intelligence of the world by a fair few bars.
I've never really been a fan of the "genre" and found that the novelty of a completely unfair platformer ran out years ago. It really doesn't take any decent level design to just put random invisible shit in the way for the player to stumble into. It's used to artificially extend both difficulty and length when it's really just wasting a player's time.

Eryi's Action looks like it's one of the worst to have a commercial release and it really does look like a newgrounds flash game. I Want to be the Guy has fairly tight controls and all the (rather real done) video game references. Eryi's Action has poor as shit controls, a cheap looking aesthetic and some horribly boring level design.
There is a chance it gets better after the first few levels I saw but even so it's probably better to play one of the 10^10^100 romhacks or flash games that claim themselves to be "the worlds hardest game" if for some reason you want to play a game like that.

A lot of people don't realize it, but controls are a huge part of platformers. IWBTG would be less assholish if it had decent controls. There is no reason to play a platformer with simply poor controls; it's not going to be fun.

RAGE is, hm... it is rather uninteresting. It's the story and setting mostly, the combat is nice as you'd expect from an id game. The major point for me was the really really nice npc animation. Enemies vault over obstacles, swing from the roof, make low sidesteps around to your side and generally move really fluidly around the environment. They stumble and flinch when a bullet hits the ground near them when standing still or running, react differently when shot in different areas.

That said, I haven't finished it and have played it for about 7 hours since I got it in an id bundle. I think I just passed a point where you take on a huge mutant with respawning rockets.

It's not open world, as I think people expected as it's so similar in style to Fallout. It's more like Quake 4 or Doom 3 in level design, with a hub zone you drive around in like in Darksiders 2 that branches off into different dungeons.
