Hmm. Maybe I'll pass on those two series. It seems like there's only one or two games in each that people seem to enjoy, so picking up 7+ games seems a bit excessive.

Master of Magic was a lot of fun when I had too much free time, it's a lot like Master of Orion and other 4X TBS games that way.  What made it stand out what the very interesting and customizable magic system.

Age of Wonders and it's sequel took that and RAN.  Very fun turn based strategy, much less tedious in my opinion, and innovative too - while capturing what made the MoM magic system so cool.  Plus the shadow realm is legit creepy.

Magic Carpet 2 is amaaaaazing, I've loved it forever.  I wish the Bullfrog team from back then was still together, they made some real gems.  That said, Syndicate 1 is unique but harder to recommend.  The interface is pretty bad and there only a few tactics needed to win.  Still, the cities are very "alive" for games of that time (much like the organic npc villages in Magic Carpet).  I bought Syndicate 2 and I'm hopeful - I played a tiny bit of a broken copy a while back, and it seemed like they improved a lot and added plot.

Damn you all for making me check out the GoG sale, practically twisting my arm into buying Planescape:Torment at 50% off. I was supposed to be productive this summer!

For the record, Master of Magic was and is amazing. Despite being (very nearly) 20 years old, I STILL end up comparing fantasy 4X's to it. I couldn't really enjoy Fallen Enchantress because I kept thinking "It's alright, but it's no MoM". And it's what, 3 bucks?

I was shocked to learn I only have 35 games on there.

...ah shit, Hotline Miami is available for $3 and comes highly recommended by certain people. Plus the Geneforge series is on sale again.

This wasn't much of a rescue.

Uh, but in other news: What exactly is Crusader Kings II like? I keep hearing about how awesome it is, but I've never managed to get many coherent details. What do you do, how does it play out, etc?

Ignoring that I highly suggest you do two things

1) Play the Demo until you know how to play!
2) DO NOT buy it unless you have friends who play it constantly.

Honestly I'd also would add not to get it unless you absolutely want it. It isn't a luke warm purchase.

Well, too late now.

I'm only a few missions in, but so far it's pretty entertaining. Most of my deaths have amused me somehow.

I haven't actually played Crusader Kings 2, but the bay12 thread is one of the few I still read (or skim) all posts on.  It sounds very complicated and unusual, and as a result produces lots of amusing and/or interesting situations.  It definitely is more about managing a medieval family and their titles than straight-up conquering.  Gotta juggle them vassals and avoid angering them empires.

It is not even that.

When you first play it the first thing you will feel is disappointment because you basically can only do 10% of everything you would like to do. 1% if you have an imagination.

So whatever you think of Crusader Kings right now... take off 90% and that is the game you are actually going to get. Which for some that is enough and makes an excellent game.

In this case it is because Crusader Kings is a game that is able to project itself in a certain way. It is one of those games that you can easily end up buying because "Ohh this is a game where I run a family in the medieval period, so I am going to be doing a lot of court maneuvering and intrigue aren't I?" and when you end up getting it you find out "Ohh, I don't do any of that... hmmm"

You have to, HAVE to play the demo. Also I will say that the Demo doesn't lock any feature and everything you can do in the game you can do in the Demo. So you are also not "time locked out" in the demo either.

The only things in the demo you cannot do are: Play any figure you wish (most of which you won't want to) and play more then a single generation.

So how much you will enjoy the demo is equal to how much you will enjoy the actual game.

I'd recommend Crusader Kings, but with reservations. There's a lot you can do in the game, but how much depends what you want out of the game. My main interest is in the family simulation aspect, and the base game is only so-so there. There's a real lack of meaningful interaction between characters, and if you play as a count, or something similarly small, whole decades can pass with very little happening.

Modded, the game has a lot more to offer. And I've still had a lot of fun with the base game. But it's a mixed bag.

Of course, this is just my opinion, and what you want out of the game may be very different.

MoM is more like Civ I and Alpha Centauri than MOO, and one of the best games ever made. How that never got a sequel is beyond me.

Well let me see, it was considered to be somewhat broken when it was first released and the people who made the game went under three years after its release after a lot of bad luck.

So either
A) Master of Magic sold badly and is a fondly remembered but a criminally undersold game (and there are so many of those).
or
B) No one was there to make a sequel

Which looking into what happened...

It was B... The creators went under, then the developers had too much financial problems to create it.
