King of Dragon Pass is on sale for 1.49 at GoG. Is it worth picking up and playing? I've heard it mentioned on the forums quite a few times.

It's a buck and a half. Give it a try.

I thought GoG was supposed to be for Good old Games? Now that there are modern and just-released games there, its no different from gamersgate.

I'd rather hear about what people think about the game first, thanks though.

Well, they are DRM-less at GoG, if you like that sort of thing.

Gamersgate does not have old games on it, though. GoG is lots of good old games made to work on newer systems, and also DRM-free newer games.

GoG is sort of moving further and further from its original goals and purposes. Even getting DLC for sale.

That's mainly because there's a finite supply of 'Good Old Games'. They already have almost every amazing classic game available, it wouldn't be a good business model if they DIDN'T also move forward and offer newer content.

Well to be fair the DLC was mostly not something they did intentionally but was because Omerta put out DLC when they indicated they wouldn't.

They really need to get Trade Empires on there.

King of Dragon Pass is really good but quite difficult. I would definitely recommend it for $1.50.

For that price there are few excuses not to pick it up.

Picked up King of Dragon Pass for a trip down memory lane, holds up pretty well when compared to my memories of it.

Basically it's a game that is (so far as I know) pretty unlike any other, and certainly very uncommon at the least.  It's a civilization management game where you make a series of decisions (how many citizens do you allocate to farming, how many soldiers should you raise, should you punish the seasoned warrior who stole some wine or let him off, where should you send explorers, which god(s) should you worship, etc) which will help to guide your society.

The goal is to become the "King of Dragon Pass" which (similar to games like Crusader Kings) requires political decisionmaking more than it does combat.

In some ways it's not unlike Faster Then Light in that you make decisions and while you can make educated guesses the 'best answer' is often impossible to know ahead of time so there is a degree of luck involved.. That said such a mechanic (while sometimes frustrating) keeps the game replayable, otherwise you'd quickly learn all the answers.

There is a lot more under the hood, but that should give you an idea of what to expect.  As others noted it (and, honestly, any half-decent game, much less a good one) is worth picking up for less than two bucks.  I promise you that if you like the genre at all it will be more than worth it.

I tend to agree that GoG is moving away from it's start by having more newer games, however as noted they still fill the niche by having tons of old games for sale, generally optimized to work on new OS.  So long as they don't drop their library of "old games" I'm totally fine with them bringing new ones into the frey.

As noted they also don't have DRM, something as far as I know no other large digital merchant can boast.

Yeah as long as they don't break their prime tenants it is fine.

And frankly newer games that are like old games (Anything by Daedelic studios for example... I really hate them and I'll have to do a Letsplay why later) are fine by me.

The issue is that they are getting closer to breaking their tenants.

Which are they getting closer to breaking?

I'm no expert on them of course, but they still provide plenty of classic games as well as some less-common contemporary games.  They still offer competitive prices and sales.  They (so far as I know) don't offer any games with DRM or at the very least they don't offer games with their own DRM.  I noticed DLC mentioned earlier, I have no idea if they ever had a promise not to offer that but such a promise would be absurd.. DLC is not, in itself, a bad thing, it's just frequently used as such.  There is lots of DLC out there that has made games much better which likely never would have existed if not for the marketing strategy of DLC.

Honestly the bigger issue that we may end up seeing one day is what happens when too many of these types of services crop up and one eventually goes under.  I mean right now Gamersgate and Steam are pretty mainstream, gamersgate has less DRM but steam has more of a convinience factor.  GoG fills a niche and is starting to branch out.

But, what happens if one folds? That could easily wind up being a lot of money gone if you can no longer access your games.

It's not really a big deal, I mean there are plenty of ways to no longer be able to access 'physical' games, lord knows I've lost or damaged CDs, or misplaced serial numbers, or whatever else that results in 'losing' a game, plus lots of games out there you play for a while then set aside, so picking them up for a song through a digital service vs. a much higher price at a brick and motor store (or even online, where the shipping alone is probably more than a digital price) is a far better deal in the long run.
