I don't remember much about Civ V before the G&K expansion. I do, however, have a fair bit of experience with the expansion, and I can safely say it solves a whole bunch of Mini's problems.

* Cities are still a bitch to take down. That said, siege engines are awesome - anything short of a capital city can be conquered with two siege engines and a couple of melee troops to draw fire. Late-game, you also get Artillery (which shoots farther than cities can counter-attack) and Bombers (no AA defenses? Sucks to be you!) to help conquer cities even faster.

* Diplomacy now shows exactly what modifiers are affecting your relationship. Its also got a lot of complexity. Declarations of Friendship/Denouncements mean you can befriend or yell at people without allying or war dec'ing them. You can demand rulers to stop settling cities near you, to move their armies away from you, or to stop spying on you (and they'll do the same to you, given a chance).

* Hexes and the one-unit-per-tile limit are a polarizing change. I like that they make battles more tactical, especially with ranged combat and terrain features - ranged attackers can't shoot over woods or hills unless the shooter is on a hill, so you'll start to prioritize hills for your archers and use different tactics for attacking hilly/wooded areas than open terrain. The lack of army stacking is a bit unfortunate, but makes terrain manipulation even more important. It's very exciting to destroy an equal-strength enemy army with 0 casualties, just because you controlled key terrain points, prioritized your targets, and abused ranged units like the OP bastards they are.  ;)

Played a Civ 5 game. Seems... different... like civ but not civ.
Preferred 4 over 5... and still prefer Alpha Centauri over Civ.

I played with it for about an hour yesterday. It was enjoyable, but clearly this game requires a lot of time spent playing to get anything done. There's a lot more complexity with management of units, resources, etc., than I remember from earlier games, and I kept losing track of what everyone was doing. Combat is so different, I think it'd take me a long time to get the hang of it, and I'm not too talented with or interested in tactics like that. I had a general feeling of not being entirely sure what was going on most of the time. A lot happened each turn and I couldn't remember all the important information from turn to turn. Which city-state was requesting aid? Do they still need aid ten turns later, which is the minimum amount of time it'll take me to get troops over there? How strong are my troops versus the ones waiting for me? I get a message that a city-state wants me to build a wonder or else they'll stop being my friend. That wonder would take 60 turns to build, and by then they're already long gone. It felt like the game was trying to make a lot of things happen fast, but not letting me react to those things quickly enough.

I'm sure I'd get used to all this if I kept at it a bit more, but it would take a lot of time, and clearly the game takes a lot of time to play in general. Right now I have a pretty limited amount of spare time and a lot of things I need to get done. I also have a few other games that I bought and have hardly played due to lack of time. So my final decision is no, I won't buy this one, even though (despite the difficulties) it was enjoyable. I'll probably play with it a bit more today until the free period ends, then move on.

For those who have not played Alpha Centauri (and its expansion, Alien Crossfire), it's available in GoG.com.  Back then GoG only had AC; when they added AC they didn't even change the price!

The automation process in Civ has definitely gotten bigger than all of the last series, then again i keep a good head count of my movable units and watch my cities construction. Gameplay itself its boring at most on the base game, Gods and Kings Ex did add alot civ elements especially religion, never bothered with diplomacy since no matter what i did my neighbors were angry so i just went ahead and rolled them over with my armies. Im very interested in Brave New World cause we get culture victories back and i get to play POLAND!!!

So... Steam was being irritable and wouldn't take my money. Does anyone happen to have an extra copy of Towns they'd be willing to trade for something around $7.50? It might take me a day or two to get back with a trade, but I will do it.

No big deal if not, I'll just grab it during the next sale when I have some more warning.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Towns Gnomoria is pretty fun, and does quite a few things right that I'd like DF to do as well (such as needing tools, and the ability to make complex jobs).

Edit: I keep mixing up my DF clones, sorry. I really did not like towns.

RE: Civ V. IMO the core gameplay suffered quite a bit, but the combat (and the resource management associated with it) was still more interesting. I don't miss Civ III's AI doomstacks at all, nor do I miss being unable to build lategame units because neither of the world's two sources of rubber were near me, or because my oil supply disappeared two turns after I captured it.

@Civ V discussion: Loved 4, not sure where I'm at on 5. It just feels a bit more arcade-y to me than Civ IV. I'm mostly just waiting for the Total Realism mod to be made for V, though I'm wondering if it's really screwed due to the lack of unit overlap which made the mod for IV work so well.

In Civ IV I invested all the time necessary to play a marathon-length world conquer on the earth map using the Mongolians (Total Realism Mod). With Civ V... I lost the Polynesian scenario and got to a point in a random map Russian game where being 1k ahead in points from everyone else made it kind of not very fun.

I tried to get into Civ 5 but it's just not my kind of TBS. I feel like there's a ton of "Gee whiz!" visuals compared to the older titles. And I find the early game to be really uninteresting because you have almost no options.

As much as I enjoy all the Civ5 bashing, could you guys maybe discuss that in a thread with that as the topic?
