X-COM: Enemy Unknown is on sale for $14 on steam.

Is it a worthwhile buy?

Did you play the original? If so, what did you like about it?

For 14 bucks? It can be, it isn't for everyone but it does have a rather general appeal.

Never even touched X-COM before, but I keep hearing about how great it is, etc, and thought I would pick it up sometime.

From what I do know about it, I could enjoy it, it seems like a nice strategy game, although I've heard it's punishing as all hell.

In that case, yeah you'd probably like it. I recommend playing on Classic difficulty or higher if you want a challenge. Normal is a bit of a cakewalk, but it might be good for getting a feel for the tactics involved.

Alright, I'll try it out.

Well if you don't mind old games, I'd also suggest the Geneforge series.

I don't understand the appeal of Geneforge, I bought it because of the recommendation but I think I need the game explained to me.

Spidweb is old school grab your pen and paper and write notes to yourself. The games do not hold your hand. This isn't Skyrim. You explore and talk and gain direction.

Not that aspect (also later games do hold your hand in the series) but rather... What is fun about it so to speak.

Heck the game has its own Mary Sue creator Avatar character as well.

I am not saying the game is bad or trying to hint at it. I am just saying I missed the point of the game.

I am not talking about yourself, there is a character in all the Geneforge series who's job it is to be more awesome then everyone else.

but the further you go in, the more you realize that Geneforge isn't about you

In a Valkyria Chronicles sort of way?

In a Way of the Samurai sort of way?

Since, as a base statement that sounds like a bad thing, but I've seen games pull that off.

Quote
It's as much a storybook experience as it is a choose-your-own-adventure as it is number-chasing, inventory-juggling RPG

I see I have to go further to open up the game. Since at the start it is pretty guided (at least where I jumped on)

How many RPGs are there where you DON'T try to become stronger then everyone else?

I feel that Geneforge gives an amazing story to fit why you are stronger then others, and why you get stronger. And it fits in multiple scenarios based on your choices.

If you are talking about a final objective, well, I haven't finished the game, but I'd say it's to discover what happened.

I really need to play that series at some point. Picked it up cheap during a sale, promptly forgot about it...

BagMod highly recommended (and you can still earn achievements with it, if that's your thing). Stash all those unique and set items!

I love me some humongous inventories.
