The fact that it looks pretty fun can only help in that regard.

I just tried to open steam for the first time in a while and it started updating. Then it crashed. Then I tried several times to re-open it, and it persisted in crashing each time. Now I'm uninstalling it, about to reinstall it from scratch and hope that it works... Has this happened to anyone else?

EDIT: Oh, and how lovely, although it said it was uninstalling, the program files folder is still there full of files, and when I tried to reinstall it told me it must be installed to an empty folder. I renamed the folder for now, installing as I type, but this is massively aggravating.

Did you try to force-close the process via Task Manager? I've had Steam act funky on launch before, and after I "closed" it the process was still running.

Bit late now. Freshly installed, re-downloading my games even though I'm sure they're still on my hard drive somewhere.

If you installed Steam to a different folder than you had before, it won't have the games you installed earlier. Check your programs and features menu if you're using Windows 7 or whatever the equivalent is for your operating system.

It's also generally a good idea to have properly organized file folders and install locations for your computer to avoid things like this. Relying on default installation paths just gives you headaches later on.

It really shouldn't be this much work. The idea that I'd have to manually organize all my install files in advance just in case Steam decides to be an asshole and stop working, so that I can retain access to the games I've paid for and already installed and played for a while, that's just too much. I'm not a hardcore gamer. I play computer games for maybe a few hours a week, if I have time, and usually I don't. I just wanted to play Dungeons of Dredmor for ten minutes and it turned into a 2-hour headache. Now I don't know what to do with all these duplicated files. Some things are missing from the original folder because of the "uninstall" but there's still tons of stuff in there and I have no idea what it is. There's a new folder called Steam2 which has the new install and none of my games, plus the original Steam folder full of files I don't know what they are.

Steam is just such a pain in the ass. Makes me miss the days I could just install a game on my computer and be done with it, without needing to connect to the internet and run everything through some middleman software. I don't see any benefit to steam other than that they had a big holiday sale and I got a bunch of games for cheap. I'm wondering if it might have been worth paying the extra few Euros to download them somewhere else.

Yo, if you copy your game install files - which are installed in your SteamApps/Common folder by default, although in the SteamApps folder in general - over to any new Steam install location in the same folder (that is, put them in  $SteamNewDirectory$/SteamApps) , so long as you have the rights to those games, once you log in with Steam running from the new location, while all your games will appear greyed out in Steam, when you double click on them to download them, it will not need to download the whole game again (usually it just seems like it does some syncing between your computer and the cloud/Steam servers, sometimes it will have updates to download/apply) and then the game will run again.

Anything that's not in SteamApps is probably not worth worrying about, although copying ALL of the files from one Steam install to another will save almost everything including your Steam password.

Any files that aren't being used in the Steam2 installation directory can be deleted.

Its not on sale right now, but this game looks kinda amazing if they manage to pull it off.

Starforge, Its what would happen if minecraft and borderlands got freaky and had a love child, with a little bit of halo, starcraft, and mirrors edge thrown in for good measure.

She doesn't even have to do that.

She can just set Steam's install directory in Steam itself to wherever she used to have Steam installed. I believe it's in view > settings > downloads > steam library folders. That way Steam just automatically links to what her old install folder was so she doesn't have to copy paste things. Though I'm honestly still scratching my head at why she didn't just install it where she had it before, or how that would have been "too much work" compared to what she has to do now.
